Picked up my S-Type last night as replacement for my X and am curious as to what the little orange light in the overhead centre console might be for. Had a look through the Owner Guide but could find no mention of it. Anyone got any ideas?

 

There should be a message next to the orange-light, right where the odometer reads.

 

? the orage light is a small led in the overhead console ie near to the rear view mirror.

 

That is a light that shines dimly on the center console to illuminate it slightly during night driving. It is hard to notice what it actually does, but try covering the light with your finger and look at the center console. Then uncover the light and see the difference. It isn't like a bright light shining on it, but it just makes it so that you can tell where things are. It is kind of a cool feature, I think.

 

Any pics? sorry, but I can't think of any light other than the red light that lights up when the factory alarm is set. It's right next to the sensor for the auto-headlights.

u must have parking aid sensors right, i believe is to turn off reverse parking aid try it.

 

svxt is correct, it is a small orange LED to 'mood light' up the centre console so you can see it clearly in the dark without blinding you. Try the experiment he suggests (covering it up and you will notice the difference). If you have a manual car it also serves to light up the top of the gear knob so you can read the gear label. It only comes on when the sidelights are switched on, or if you have autolamps it should come on automatically when it gets dark. It may only be on the 02 facelift S-Types, but it is on all the X-Types, X350s, etc, with that common style roof console.

The parking sensor LED (if you have front sensors) is red, and part of the switch. The little orange one is right next to the microphone in the very middle of the roof console.

 

yep defo mood lighting. As mentioned not real noticable until you put your finger over it. Thanks for the info. It is pretty neat. Should take my mind of the fact that SHMBO has alrady managed to kerb it. Unbelievable!

 

FOUND IT [sm=happy046.gif]. . . . . I have been driving my Jag for over two months and never
noticed that littleorange light. I always ride with my drving lights on, but with the time change
"it gets darker now" it is more prevalent.

It hasa very subtle glow to it. Now that I know it is there "and what it does", it looks kinda cool.

 

I think thats for the garage door setup!

 

Not the orange LED. that's to light the console from overhead. Red is for the garage door buttons.
