Parting is such sweet sorrow
Well after many years of faithful service, I finally sold my 2001 S-Type. Not all that earth shattering, but it did have special meaning. As the first S-Type that I had ever owned or driven, it was the alarm clock for my gently slumbering senses in that from day one of ownership I could not believe just what I had been missing.
With over 160,000 miles of excellent service, she was looking a little worn around the edges however, I could not drive more than a mile without breaking out into a smile. Sold to a younger driver here in town, I could not help but notice his beaming face as he drove away.
So now my 2003 STR is my daily driver for the 90 mile commute and am I still smiling, hell no, I am bloody laughing!

Agreed. Great story.
I like all versions of the S-type. It is good to know that the S-type is capable of delivering excellent service. I hope to get that type of mileage out of my 2003 model.
It is good to see that your 2001 is in the hands of a new, appreciative owner. All in all, not bad, not bad at all.

Nice story. Great to see the faithful Jag moved on to give another the pure pleasure that is felt sitting behind the wheel of art verses driving a "fridge" to work each day. You did clue the new owner in on the world of Jaguar Forums I hope....
The maintenance cost of the car was low IMO; although I did not buy the car new, I put on most of the 160k miles – It was the 3.0ltr V6 engine version
Rear diff, transmission, engine and even steering fluid were all changed to synthetic and I used the K&N Gold filter with 7.5k mile intervals.
Other maintenance items all fall into the ‘pretty standard’ category for this year of S-type, Expansion tank, sway bar bushings, rotors and pads, battery, tyres (used the Kumho Ecsta SPT), plugs, transmission filter, coolant and coolant hoses.
I did replace the O2 sensors (upstream) at 100k miles not for any fault, but to ensure good fuel economy and I think it paid off. It regularly returned 28 MPG commuting and on long drives 30 MPG was the norm.
NEVER once did it break down or refuse to start and by my calculations cost in the region of $0.03 per mile in maintenance, not running costs.
After writing this I am wondering why I sold it!

Damn, that is pretty impressive. That's the best way to 'judge' value of the car for sure.
