Default Performance Driving? STR

What is the best way to launch from the stoplights to get the quickest time?
What is the best strategy for twisties?
Wringing the max out of overtaking on freeways?
IE what's the best way to drive the vehicle in anger?

  1. light the fuse with a very long match ...
  2. eat them only two at a time ...
  3. never travel below the speed of light ...
  4. leave car at home ... and run very aggressively ...
What's the prize for all 4 correct answers ... or can only grown-ups play?

I'm serious about the questions...I'm new to the STR and JAG - there must be best stategies
EG is the best pullaway achieved by Sport on , 2nd gear , DSC off and then mashing the pedal , or is it better with S on , box in drive , DSC on and revving against the brake?

Do you leave the car in Drive with sport on , or row the box with sport on for twisties...and so on.

maybe you can go out and try all of these different methods and report back your findings, from what ive seen so far you seem to be the right fit for the job...

Leave it in D. It does weird things when you try to row it yourself.

Sport mode, drive, DSC off, launch off idle with no power braking. I use the J-gate for spirited driving; the transmission reacts pretty quick, but I like consistency of knowing exactly what gear I'm in. I also use the J-gate for overtaking, but flooring it is usually enough.

Definitely don't just mash it from a stop. The tires will go up in smoke and the engine revs so fast you will hit the rev limiter before you know it. Which kills all the fun right now. It's still fun but slow! It's not a very good burn out machine even though it has plenty of power to be one!

As QuartzStypeR said I have to get the car moving just a little bit before I hit it.

Even with DSC off you will still have the rev limiter in operation as there is no way to shut it off.

You have a 2003 and they are known for short shifting. Does your car wind all the way to redline somewhere around 6100 rpm? That makes a BIG difference in how fast the car is. One of the early magazine road tests could only get a 14.1 sec ¼ mile because it shifted too soon. Not really sure if anything changed but the later year STR’s don’t seem to suffer from that.

My 2005 will take to red line in all the gears. Well at least all the ones I have the guts to test!! When you get to 3rd gear and above the speeds are just too fast on most roads.

Mine seems to short shift 1 and 2 , 5k shift at 1 - 2 and 5.2k at 2nd to 3rd.
Not sure how I can get to redline in 1 and 2

The short shifting has been reported a good bit and like I said we don't know what if anything Jaguar did but the 2003-2004 STR's seem to have the most complaints about it.

May be shift manually and hold it to red line?

Mine also short shifts 1-2 at around 5500 rpm and 2-3 around 5800. I'll try holding it in 2nd to see where it hits the limiter at next time I'm at the track; but I think it hit right around the 5800 mark anyways last time I tried it.

1st gear is an issue as the box will not allow you to select and hold it in any configuration - the "row it yourself" only lists 2nd gear...
I wonder if a TCU reflash at the jag dealers will help - I have had one or 2 incidents of "the lurch" .. car is at 60 000 miles soon , maybe time for a tranny fluid/filter change too?

Just a pity you cannot do to the Jag what I can to my vettes via OBD and ECU/TCU flashing..I can not only control all my engine management and fuelling , but I can program the 4l60e boxes the way I want , ie as to when kickdown happens , line pressure (and thus shift hardness) , when the TC locks up or doesn't and so forth...
The software and hardware was real cheap...

i think only about 1500-2000 STR's produced.....and a million of the others cars you have mentioned.......not really an ideal set up for a company wanting to produce and sell aftermarket products as there is comparatively no aftermarket for the STR...
