I was wondering if annyone has seen someone use a aftermarket supercharger like say a Whipple on the N/A 4.2? I have been wanting to add more power and haven't figured out anny other ways, so I think just do it myself (will be sending the motor and trans out to be built) and if you have anny knowledge or know if this is or isn't possible please let me know cause I don't wanna do it all just to find out it won't work. If you think it is possible then what are your opinions and what all do you think I would have to do to make it work.

 

It is not at all easy, the best and by far the cheapest way is to purchase an STR!!
There are just so many parts that are STR only, they are vertualy like a different car!

I have not seen it done. That is probably because it works out cheaper to just purchase an STR in the first place.
Also if you try and use an aftermarket ECU then many of the systems on the car will just not work including the instrument cluster.

ok, I appreciate the info and did not know that about the ecu, guess i will be keeping this one as a show car and get a str for the fun stuff cause my s-type is a 1 of 200 and only about 80 left in the world so i will never sell it!!!

 

You can do it but you’ll probably have to take a die grinder to the Tapia pistons to lower the compression or maybe the combustion chamber on the heads. Then you’ll need a whole new program for the PCM new sensors fuel rail naybe. Injectors and fuel pumps, some wiring harness.

 

If you have very deep pockets, and find the right genius to build the car, anything is possible. But finding that genius amongst all the other technicians can be like finding a needle in a haystack. Not that I’m knocking all the other technicians, they may do an excellent job at many things, but upgrading, hacking and mapping is a specialist field. Not many will have the ability, even fewer will be really good at it. Before you commit yourself by starting the project, do your homework to find the right expert.

 

One thing about just buying an "R" in the first place is the value of the car would then never be an issue as it would be seen as a "cool factory" hotrod. Also, if someone had to work on it in the future, they wouldn't need to get your unique conversion plans to complete the job. I once converted a 1965 Corvette BACK to being a "Fuelie" because that's what it was, originally. Totally worth it. But to go the other way...
