Power Steering Fluid Level help
Hey All,
This is my first post here. Today my dad and I were looking at fluid levels in my 2000 stype. I found the power steering very hard to read. It doesnt appear to register on the opaque level indicator on the side at all. I cannot tell if the level is so low as it is not registering or if it is high as it be over filled slightly.
When I look in the top of the fluid tank there is fluid there that can be sucked up.
My question is how can one tell if the fluid is so low or if it is over filled, when it appears that fluid is in the tank. Can the filter that is in the top of the tank be removed possibly, so that one can look down?
My power steering is not making any noises (what I would have expected if it was low) and there are no leaks from my car.
Thank you everyone,
Philip

The 2000 MY S-Type has the Ford steering rack with a different PAS system. The fluid used was the ESSO 998 and don't know of an alternative fluid. I keep several liters of the fluid but the system also requires a vacuum procedure to evacuate air from the system if the system is opened.
The reservoir has an integral filter so if the system is contaminated, the reservoir should be changed.
I have had to replace the reservoir and fluid after an 'oil change franchise' topped up the steering reservoir with windscreen washer fluid. It took several liters of flushing and purging.
The ZF rack was used in later S-Types so the DEXRON can be used as recommended.
