Default Power Steering shudder

I've noticed the last couple of days that, if I turn my steering wheel with the car sitting still, I can feel a shudder through the steering wheel. Anybody else run into this??

How far do you need to turn it to cause that?

Could it just be normal for the PAS?

(I was very tempted by the "well, don't do that" joke.)

Engineer there was some talk about an additive that goes in the power steering reservoir that Jag has. It does away with the shudder, cooing, and "column noise". I will look for that thread.

Found it:

My 03 stype has the 'shutter' as well. I had the Jag Shop in Portland, Oregon do the steering additive a month ago and it completely got rid of the annoying noise but the hudder remains. Asked the technician and he said, it's annoying, but the additive will not address the shudder. The bushings would need replacement, if you want that totally removed. I asked if it was safe to drive and he said, sure, no problem, but it is somewhat annoying. It only does it when I turn the wheel to the far right or left quickly.

Oldengineer;
Your car is a 2006 and should not be having this issue?? I have attached several TSB's concerning steering noise. I also agree to try the additive first. It's cheap and easy with no downside. The part number is in one of the attached TSB's.

Default I'll join the post

Mine does this, kind of feels like a chuckle/kicking back when you turn it quickly.
I have not looked into it, but will follow the post and look at it more when I have time to.
Pete

Default Thanks for your help.

First chance I get, I'll pick up a bottle of the additive at the dealer and give it a try.

No really, oldengineer has sold his vehicle and only pops in from time to time nowadays. I believe that the additive did fix his problems as I recall.

Dang, I've already put the additive in, and then when my squeaking noise didn't go away, I added some Lucas Oil stop leak power steering additive (DB6's suggestion). That stopped the noise, but now I have the shudder! I think I'd rather have my noise back!

Well, the stutter/shudder/chuckle is still here! I am at wits end!

I will probably get another jar of that additive stuff.

You're not supposed to use more additive. You sound to have a different problem so should look for what it is. Which S-Type do you have?

Default Steering Shudder

So, have the same shudder symptoms. My mechanic diagnosed as a system leak akin to a fluid leak except the leak sucks air in to the system. A new rack and steering box installed right around $2K and still have the shudder. Talked to the dealer and they said all the lines should be replaced. I f that doesn't do it then the reservoir would be next. Really? I'm not sure my warranty company or my funding resources are able to do the "keep throwing parts in til it's fixed" approach. Any thoughts?

Thanks
