Default Preventative Maintenance ??

What product should I use to clean out my fuel injectors? I mean, something I can buy at Auto-Zone. Also, is there a product I can use for the transmission?, there is a slight slip downshifting into 1st&2nd (very minimal slip)

I use liberal amount of gasoline to keep my injectors clean. Any brand will do.

How do you know there's 'slip' when downshifting from 2 to 1?

What kind of car do you have BTW?

Hi there - Proper protocol is to introduce yourself in the new members section.

What year/engine?

Regardless, I use chevron fuel system cleaner every 3,000 miles - no way to add anything to the transmission - have it checked my a reputable transmission shop.

You will find several schools on thought on fuel additives and you will also find that THEY will swear by whatever THEY recommend. Adding an additive is not going to harm the car if used properly and what I mean is not to over use it. My choice is BG44K fuel additive and I do not use it more than 2 times a year but most of the time once a year.

Before I add anything to the trans fluid I would want to know why it is not shifting properly. Do you have trouble codes? If not I would consider draining, replacing filter and refill.

Also you need to tell us what year and car we are talking about.

If you really believe you have injector problems, remove and send to a company who will clean & flow test. But they're likely fine.

Many trans problems are actually engine problems so at least start there.

It's a 2003 S-Type Sport---V8 4.2L

I can feel it slip minimally when I push on the gas after slowing down between 5-15MPH
I'm going to take it in to get a tune-up at it's next oil change, so I will more then likely flush the trans too.

I used to have a BMW that I added Lucas fuel treatment & Lucas transmission treatment. And they seemed to work great for both the engine and transmission.

THX everyone that has helped me out so far!

I did get a little input on the transmission fluid change and was told that,

“The bottom line on aftermarket fluid is the unique shift strategy of ZF transmissions. It allows clutches to slip or overlap coming on and going off. This provides for very smooth shifts, minimal loss of power and more control of emissions. To control the shift the computer directly controls pressure to specific clutches and monitors very closely its amount of slip.”

“Fluids other than OE or ZF (same) may have a different friction profile or may vary batch to batch of the same fluid. This variance will cause the computer to adapt. This is ok if your transmission is in the middle of a range. If your transmission has a minor internal leak, worn clutches, glazed clutch or whatever it has adapted and may no longer be able to adapt to the new fluid. This would cause it to set a gear ratio code and go to fail safe.”

I am gathering other info and will post on my page but my condo repairs are first.

I hope this helps!

hmm, it doesn't feel at all like "the lurch" (of which there are a few so "the" turned out wrong) - google the site and then bear in mind you will not have anything like so bad a time. And a reflash or other fix tends to work nowadays.

If it feels like the transmission just can't make up it's mind, then it's kinda normal-ish and can be addressed in most cases with the latest software.

Modern cars don't get tune-ups, there's nothing to 'tune' anymore. What exactly are you going to get done?

I have nothing scheduled as of right now.
Is there anything that you can recommend I do?
I like keeping my cars running as close to perfect as possible.
The Lucas* Oil treatment & Lucas* Transmission treatment did wonders for both my 1994 Audi 100s(owned in HighSchool) and my 2001 BMW 330Ci(bought last year)
I'm wondering if it's ok to use them in my Jaguar.

I think pointless but in the case of the trans possibly would cause serious damage. Read the How Tos for ideas that would be useful.

I should mention that the information listed in my post #7 was from my source at ZF. I would not be adding any type of additive.
