Quick tire size question.
Will 245/40/19 front and 275/35/19 work on an S-Type?
I have a friend who has an almost new set of dunlop sport sp2's in those sizes that he had on his bmw summer wheels. He totaled the bmw this winter, and is willing to let me have the tires for cheap. Considering my car has developed a shake even after balancing on the 245/35/19 falken tires, which are pretty worn, and always seemed a bit too low profile for the car, this would be the perfect replacement. If it will work...
Anyone have an idea without trying it?
Thanks,
George

Just in case you don't know, you can check the amount they'd be different from the stock ones. google for
tire calculator
Try a few of the stock sizes to see what sort of variation those have, then try the ones you mention. Your speedo will be out by some amount. I think when fitted that jag config the car for the size - see the engineering test mode for suggestive (LOL) evidence.
However, you probably mean: will they fit, will they be safe, etc. Sorry - I don't know. If the above shows only a tiny difference, they'll likely fit. I think you have an STR which I think has the least slack, though.
You should probably tell your insurers if you fit them.

Here is a tire calculator. http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html
So, I used the R as a reference...If you had a R, they (TireRack ) list the stock sizes as 245/40-18 front and 275/35-18 rear.
So, going to 19's the rack says to use 245/35-19 front and 275/30-19 rear.
So, using the calculator, the size you are looking at will result in a 3 to 4 percent difference in the speedo, and about an additional inch in Diameter compared to the stock sizes.
The other question is what are the widths of the wheels you have? Are they all one size or do you have 8" in the front and 9" for the rear.. I ask since the minimum rim width for a 275 series tire is 9".

I have 9" all around I believe. The sidewall is on a bit of an angle almost like the 245 is a bit stretched to get on there. If it will work, I'd MUCH rather have the extra 1/2" of sidewall. The speedo difference is negligible enough.
I potentially MAY have a bent rim - although I'm hoping my 45-55 mph wheel shimmy is a balance issue.
And I don't have an STR (although I wish if anyone wants to donate to the fund). I have an 03 3.0 on stock suspension. = Which has more wheel gap than a monster truck lol.
I've attached a pic of what the car currently looks like.

All you have to do is call Discount Tire or Tirerack. Tell them your vehicle specs, and ask them if that size will fit on it, make sure you let them know what the offset is on the wheels if they are not stock. I just did this for my wife's Saab and they were very helpful. You can also email them, but it may take a day for a reply.
Bull is dead on with that... I see the "rack" banners on here all the time. They are real good over the phone. I have bought wheels, and tires, not necessarily at the same time and they have always been great. I would also ask them if there are any concerns running staggered tires on non-staggered rims. They will steer you right.
Those wheels look real sweet... That's it, no more formula, jar food, or diapers for Olivia... I'm getting new wheels for my car!

Ok so I did some research.
I haven't found anyone running that size 19's on the car. 19's don't really seem that popular anyway.
However, there's a bunch of guys running 20's with 245/35/20 tires. - which should be almost the exact same diameter overall as these tires mounted on 19's.
I came up with the following numbers - tell me if you agree.
245/40/19 = 26.71 inches total diameter
275/35/19 = 26.57 inches total diameter
245/35/20 = 26.75 inches total diameter
So in theory if the 20's work so should these. Right?
It will give me more sidewall, and not have me dodging potholes like driving is a game of frogger for fear of destroying a rim.
I've run staggered tires on non staggered rims many a time in my younger Camaro / Mustang days with no ill effects.
Thanks for the compliment on the wheels. Oh and Jeff if you do neglect your daughter and decided to get wheels (just kidding), do yourself a favor and get 18's or 20's. 19's seem to be the "red headed stepchild" of aftermarket wheels, and the tire sizes and selection is VERY limited, and priced at least 50% higher than either their 18" or 20" counterparts.
Hopefully the tires will be the first step in curing the shake between 45-55 or so mph I'm dealing with. I took a better look at my tires, and well they are almost gone.

Using the stock STR rims, I went with 285/35/18 (rear) and 245/40/18 (front). Sidewalls for front and rear now match. Never had any rubbing with the wider tires (Toyo Proxes T1R).
George,
Looks like they will work just fine. I would get them mounted right away.
And, yes, if I ever get wheels they will be 18". I agree that 19's are kind of an odd ball. Funny thing, is Jag offered them up on almost all their models. Anyway, I'd really like to pick up a set of Rial Porto 18". But just a dream for now....

These sizes are almost identical to the 245/35/19 tires I have now, just with a 1/2" more sidewall.
I'm trying to do the same thing as if I were running a 20" fitment, but with 1/2" more sidewall but a 19" wheel.
People on here have also successfully run 18" XF takeoffs (which I would actually consider a set if I could find one for less than an arm and half a leg) - which runs a 245/45/18 tire for an overall diameter of 26.68 inches. In looking at my wheels the ONLY thing I was worried about was getting close to the inner wheel liner in the front with the steering at or close to full lock.
RIGHT before I got the S-Type there was a local set, with only 20 drive home miles for $500 on craigslist, but it was just too much tire for my X-Type. Called the guy a week later and they were gone. Every set I have seen since then has been at least double that!
I SHOULD have bought them.
1320 - Do you have any pics of your car? I'd love to see how the sidewall looks.
I'll probably be getting the tires mounted this Saturday.

George,
I will take a few pics for you but I may need to send them to you directly. I don't believe I have posted to this forum enough to attach pics in a "reply" yet. I' m happy with the look and like the additional traction when I go to the track. The majority of my 60ft times are between 1.9x to 2.0x. My best ET to date in cold weather is 13.1x sec @ 106.x mph.

I got the tires mounted and road forced balanced on my car. They fit, and do not rub, but look sort of out of place on the car. There is a pronounced difference in the amount of sidewall... But it almost looks like something that belongs on a muscle car rather than a luxury car, especially with the 275's in the rear. It's amazing how much smaller it makes the wheels look too...
However I can't complain for $150 (mounted and road forced as well), from a friend, but I'm not too thrilled with it. I'll attach some pics so you guys can get the idea.
NOW the bigger issue. The steering wheel shimmy.. It's WORSE with the fresh tires...
Its more pronounced at 50 mph and over a bit more of a speed range. (45 -50 = the worse, but it becomes slightly detectable at 35, and is still detectable till you pass 60) Plus the car never feels completely 100% smooth.
There was NO obvious damage to any of the wheels, and they road force balanced just fine.
Where should I go from here?
Could it be an alignment issue? Suspension? Just too much tire for the car?
I think I need to speak to Brutal or one of the other Jag techs for recommended alignment specs with these wheels / tires. If it is wheels and tires, I'm just going to sell these off and start fresh with a new set.
Thanks again,
George
I purchased tires for 2003 Jaguar S-type 8 cyl. Original size was 235-50-17. They were replaced with 235-55-17. Is this too big? There seems to be rubbing when I cut the wheel deep or turn.
What should correct size be?
What should correct size be?
I think it may be. Remember, the second number denotes the sidewall height as a percentage of width, so the tire you listed is taller than stock. 235/50 is the correct spec. for 17's. Another alternative is 245/45. Wider and very close to the same height. The stock height (Diameter) for the 17's is 26.3 inches, the size you listed is 27.2. The clearance on a stock Jaguar is pretty tight. That said, other than a roughly 3% error in speed, there should be enough room for the size you listed. Check inside the wheel well for signs of tire rub. Marks on the fender rim or suspension arms. If nothing, the sound you hear maybe something else going on.
