random no start....any ideas?
with no money for dealers, im discovering how nerve wracking it can be to own a jag,,,my 2000 s-type (3.0) has been an absolute dream to own and drive, ive owned this car for about a year and all has been well. onlly in the last few weeks it has randomly refused to start, it turns over but does not fire up......sometimes it will be a matter of minutes before all is well again , this time its been 2 days, maybe its temperature related as its been very cold here for a few weeks,(western north carolina)...maybe someone can help me know where to start,...cheers, wickfordriver (originaly from romford, essex.)

Yeah, you need to find out if its not getting fuel or not getting spark. you should pick up a fuel pressure gauge and some sort of spark checker, they're pretty cheap at parts stores.
i assume you dont have any ses lights or anything? Ive had cars that wouldn't start because the factory security system was engaging when it shouldn't be. Make sure you hit "unlock" on the key fob before trying, or it could be an issue with the system itself.

you dont even need a pressure gauge, or spark testor. for fuel when it cranks but no starts, press in the shrader valve on the fuel rail, if the pumps working youll get a good release of pressure. on the spark pull up the air box and remove one of the coils, lift it slightly from the plug while someone cranks the engine, youll hear the spark hitting.

While ive pulled off wires to check for spark, it wouldn't be the best thing to do for someone who doesn't really know what they're doing. it is a high enough voltage to kill you, or at the very least knock you on your butt!
Also, with your key on (not cranking) you should hear your fuel pump whining for a few seconds

For starters, pick up an OBDII tester. They're cheap, will spit out the error codes ( you didn't say whether the check engine light was on or not), and it'll quickly reveal fuel pressure and voltage without getting your hands dirty or shocked, let you know if plugs are firing, plus other important data. I often leave a Bluetooth OBDII tester plugged into a Jag when driving so I can whip out my phone when the check engine light pops on, read the code and clear the engine light.
Intermittent problems often start with low battery voltage, especially when the thermometer drops. Try attaching a battery charger before trying to start so it has plenty of voltage. Also, when starting, it is best to just turn the key to the run position and then wait until all the dash lights have finished their sequence and let the ECU read the sensors, only about 5 seconds or so.
