Default Rear door-lock problems

Hi. I have a 1999 S-type 3L. The passenger rear door lock opens with the key fob and the central locking button but doesn't lock. I have to lock it manually by pressing the button in. Garage says i need to get a new lock and they will fit it. But I don't really know what i'm looking for. I've seen several ads on ebay etc at varying prices, some are the full lock and some are parts of lock eg actuator. Any idea what i'd need to fix the problem? Part number etc? The other rear door also has a different issue. It locks and unlocks ok but the passenger can't get out because the door wont open when you pull the inside handle. It seems like the child lock is on, but it's the same whether its on or off. So the only way to get out is if someone pulls the outside handle. Any ideas?

Default Rear Lock problems

I have a similar problem, but my passenger rear lock doesn't either lock or unlock except manually - I just live with it, but if there's a fix I'd like to try it. Mine is a 2004 S Type V8

I had a problem on my rear locks caused by rust on a swivel point connected to the handle. I took the assembly apart, cleaned the rust off worked it free again with penetrating oil. Then cleaned it again before putting on marine grade waterproof grease. It worked fine since then.
However, that is only one possible issue out of several that could be related to the central locking. To remove the door handle and lock mechanisms is not easy and you may need to get some new door panel fittings to replace any that break.

I like the idea of Sportston to tackle the issue with oil & grease. Also, there is a good chance that a bit of plastic on the door lock mechanism is broken.
Either way, you would have to access and remove the door lock mechanisms, which do not work properly, to be able, what exactly the issue is. Before you rip out the inner door panels check carefully that you removed all screws - there are not many screws, but the ones, which are there, are well hidden. You will damage some of the inner-door-panel-fixing-elements. But those should be available check on one of the cheap online-platforms. It would be good to check somehow which ones you need, so you can order them before you remove the panels completely.

If the issue is broken plastic on the mechanisms it's time to get creative to find an individual fix for that broken plastic...

PS: Before ripping things apart, it might be an idea to spray a lubricant (penetration spray, water displacement spray or better even silicone spray) into the door lock mechanisms, which are on part-time-strike...

See if this thread helps. It shows the internals on a later model, but I believe the early models are similar:

OEM numbers can be found here, to help in your search if parts are needed:

Thanks for the link!
That is a classic S-Type thread and has helped many people. I had forgot about it because it was so long ago.
Very well done!
