Default rpm match

on my 2000 4.0 stype, when i shift to neutral at 60 miles per hour the rpms will increase from 1800 rpms to a little over 2000 rpms. I was wondering if this is normal

No, it's not normal for someone to shift to neutral at 60mph, or any speed for that matter.

Only for the sake of completeness:

... except when performing a proper double declutch.

Admitttedly, it is completely irrelevant when discussing automatics.

considering the car monitors the speed and idle, it would seem normal to me, so that when you do shift back into drive the RPMS are matching the speed it could be at when in drive??

i know my DSG in my GTI acts funky sometimes, but really the computer knows where it should be at all times.

Just a guess though

Admittedly so, but going in and out of drive while the car is in motion is not normal either. Why do it?

My guess is that if there was someone else here that had done this, he/she would have posted the results.

I don't have a 4.0 but wouldn't try that if I had.

BTW, definitely don't try it in Cruise.

When you shift the car into Nuetral, at any speed, you are essentially disconnecting the engine from the drivetrain, the engine no longer has the load of the moving vehicle bogging it down. The energy that was just before being used to propel the vehicle forward will now cause a rise in engine speed because the load is no longer there.

This would be true only if the driver kept his foot on the gas pedal while shifting to neutral. Surely the OP didn't, ummmm OK never mind.

Yes it's all conjecture, cause nobody else is going to try it!!!
