Default S-type 3.0 -99 Loud fan?

Hello! My S-type started making a wierd sound today. A good comparisment would be a very very loud vacuum cleaner or like the first thing that came to my mind, a jet engine haha.

It comes from the front of the car and its there all the time.
Hot or cold, if you are driving or at idle.
Does not get louder or quieter when you rev.

Anyone had similar experience?

If it's the engine fan and it's on all the time then I think it's one of:
1. its module has failed
2. some wiring has failed (chafed and shorting)
3. PCM is commanding it on (because seeing a bad sensor)
4. something else I can't think of

If there is ANY time when it does not happen then it's not 1 or 2 but something else so please be sure whether it is all the time when engine is running. Can you confirm please?

Is the dash temperature gauge OK?

The early cars (Pre 2003) have that weird hydraulic powered fan. On the Lincoln LS board it got so expensive and hard to fix the guys figured out how to replace it with the normal electric version. Should have had that from the beginning!

Apparently the early cars got a smaller alternator that could not handle the load of the electric fan and when both cars (S Type and the LS) were upgraded for the 2003 model year part of the improvements was a larger alternator.

Have you checked the fluid level?

Is the fan turning when you hear the noise?

Be aware it might be running wide open for a reason. Any overheating? What is the temperature gauge doing? Have you ever done any maintenance, like change the fluid??

My fan seems to be electric, disconnected it while the engine was running and the noise stopped, so its definatly the fan.
It is on full blast all the time, even today in -14 celcius with cold engine.
The dash temperature is fine and works normally.
The fan is turning.

No overheating and i have made no maintenance.

Oops! Sorry you are correct. Only the LS got the hydraulic fan.

Bottom rear of rad I think but it takes & drives a PWM signal so not easy to DIY and you could damage it if you don't know what this means. Start with fuses & relays, then connectors & wiring.

First check it's a fault as opposed to a symptom e.g. of failed thermostat / low coolant etc.

If this is too much, find a shop and soon

Maybe an auto-electrician but help by downloading JTIS and look through to find things such as the Electrical Guide

I have been driving the car with the fan unplugged for a while, but today was a pretty hot day and i saw the temp gauge starting to go past the middle, so i plugged the fan back in. And now it worked like a charm, for a couple of hours...
Now its once again at full blast all the time. I have checked coolant level, fuses, wiring and cleaned all the contacts. Where are the relays for the fan?
