Default S-Type 4.0 2002 Error Codes = Sad Kitty

I have an 02 S-type 4.0L as a second car, and it's giving me some troubles. It stalls out in the middle of driving it sometimes. You can press the gas and nothing will happen for a moment, then it kicks back in and starts driving. It feels electrical. It had the same symptoms before when I had a bad #2 coil. Replaced it then and it went away.

My mechanic read the following 3 codes:

P0308 - Misfire Cylinder 8
P0430 - Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1
P1383 - Variable Cam Timing Overretarded Bank 1

P0308 - I've had the misfire cylinder code on #2 before about 6 months ago, replaced the coil and it went away. I remember reading that the 02 s-types had probs with the Coils.

I've no doubts it's the #8 coil for this problem, and even better Drivewire has a whole set of 8 (16) for only $100 so I think i'll replace them all this time with new spark plugs.

DriveWire - 2002 Jaguar S-Type Base 8 Cyl 4.0L Ignition Coil

P0430 - Mechanic said to just pick up a new cat for bank 1, which I can find for about $218-$250 for this car on drivewire, any other ideas? Could my 02 sensor be toast also?

02 2002 Jaguar S-Type Catalytic Converter - Emission Control | Drivewire.com

P1383 - Not sure what to do here, Was hoping some nsight?

Thanks in advance if anyone can help out, would like to get the parts ordered up asap.

Also the car has the 'DSC Traction Failure' that comes up when it stalls. It goes away with a turn off/turn on procedure. No clue on this one as my mechanic can't mess with that one he said.

You have the early generation S Type. I would replace all 8 coils, all 8 spark plugs and most importantly replace both cam cover gaskets including all 8 spark plug well gaskets.

Next DO NOT replace anything else until the car has been driven with all the above done. When the coils misfire many things can appear to happen from catalytic converter problems to replacing the transmission. Ignore all that until the car is running properly.

All DOHC cars have similar coil problems. Of course some worse than others. It's not related to Jaguar but to the type of engine.

After those changes I'd disconnect the battery to force the car to relearn the engine's minute behaviour. (That will clear the codes, too.)

Yes. One and the same. If you do some searching you can find the Lincoln LS part numbers and they are available aftermarket at a much cheaper price than Jaguar. Might just call the parts place and ask for a 2000-2002 Lincoln LS 3.9L valve cover gasket set. And yes the Jaguar 4.0 is the same as the Lincoln 3.9L. The Jag got VVT which the LS did not until 2003.
