Default S type auto gearbox

Hi.
Once again, you'll probably need to excuse my ignorance seeing as I have a tendency to drive the beast, not lie under it....... ; what are the differences in the 3.0 litre and the 4.0 litre auto gearbox on a pre facelift S Type? Only asked because I've been offered a very good 4.0 litre box at a great price even though my S type is 3.0 litre?
Thanks in advance and wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Bright New Year.

What year S-Type do you have? Up to 2002, S-Types used the same Ford 5 speed gearbox. Thereafter the same ZF 6 speed came with both the V6 and V8.

I think you are right, they all have the Ford 5R55N box.

My library of info, small at the moment but growing fast, is that the 5 speed all use a Ford Europe 5R55N transmission.

The actual transmission is possibly the same physically. The electronic control systems would probably be different for the 2 engines, but I reckon all that stuff is outside the unit.

A respected trans specialist should be able to clarify it more, I hope.

Side note. The Ford Explorer transmission (which is often tagged to this unit) is a 5R55E, and is NOT the same in any way that I have been able to find, other than being the "same family" of transmissions.

As stated, they're the 5R55N and yes the electronics are outside (in the PCM). However, there may be mounting plates and who (*) knows what else different.

(*) not me, but a tech or trans shop probably know

Definately, followed by a JD for breakfast, with a Vegemite sandwich, the only way to start the day.

Some Ford Explorers use the ZF 6HP26 I think you'll find.
