Default S-Type AutoBox Issue (2000 model)

Hello,

Can anyone advise on solving the following Autobox issue.

Jaguar drives normal when cold, gears engage, plenty of power transfer and no gearslip.

With operating temperature reached or following long drives - higher gears no longer engage and 4000+ rpm is required for gentle hill starts.

I believe this to be an electronic/ sensor fault which is placing the car is Limp Mode.

Would appreciate any advice.

Thanks.

You have the Ford 5R55N and the site's Search will get you useful threads.

It may be the commonish spring needinng to be replaced, a solenoid or other problem (again, Search will get you info). Might even be low on fluid but find the thread about how to check because it's not exactly obvious and must be done right.

Unlikely to be a sensor.

Ahh, you're a newbie - welcome but also please post an intro in the newbie part or you'll not see pics, PDFs etc.

Thanks for your response.

Would you recommend getting codes pulled? - costs £30 here.
On a tight budget.

Would not be surprised if springs have failed; juddering as described in other posts sounds very familiar.

Thanks.

You should verify that the fluid level is good first, the 30 quid will be well spent if it points you in the right direction.

That actual autobox has limited abilities to know what's wrong so you may have no codes.

You could get a code reader for about that price. It would only read the PCM but that's what stores the associated autobox codes (if any) on this era car.

Thanks for your comments.

Discovered evidence the ATF leaking onto exhaust, certain cross member parts - not sure how much or for how long.

I opened the upper fill plug and pushed about 300ml into the system - (inner drain was very tight and now stripped) - but it kicked about 50ml back out the fill hole...left vehicle overnight but still won't take any more fluid (flowing back out).

Does the inner drain plug need to be open (air flow) to allow fresh fluid into the upper fill hole?

Very frustrating. Hope you can help.

Many thanks again.
