Default S-Type Differential Rebuild Parts

Hello,

I'm in process of rebuilding a differential for my 2005 STR. This is my second attempt. The original diff had a carrier bearing fail at 81K miles. I replaced them and slapped it back together. Now15K miles later, the pinion bearings are making noise.

Starting with a JY 2005 4.2 unit off ebag , I am replacing pinion and carrier bearings before swapping it in. With 134K miles on this unit, the carrier bearings looked fine, but the inner pinion bearing is starting to show its miles.

I've found that some of the bearing information posted in other threads on this forum is incorrect. Also, part numbers listed at rockato are incorrect. The parts you need are generally available but the parts listings for our vehicles are missing, incomplete, or just plain wrong.

With miles adding up on these vehicles, I suspect more of you will find this information useful.

Here are the part numbers that actually fit. All part numbers are Timken unless otherwise noted.

Pinion Bearings
Inner: NP945727 + NP559445
Outer: M88048 + M88010

Carrier Bearings (2 each)
LM603049 + LM603012
(LM603011 are too narrow and not what came out of the JY unit)

Axle Seals (order 2)
XR821244 - Jaguar
(Timken 714569 OD is too small and the reported Ford part number isn't available)

Pinion Seal
3604

Crush Sleeve
81056 - Dorman (2 crush sleeves come in this package)

Pinion Flange Dust Deflector (to replace your cracked/warped unit)
E6TZ4859A - Ford (the number molded into the part is similar but not a searchable part number)

Pinion Nut
Allstar ALL72155 (@amzn. I haven't tried this part yet. Jag pinion measures 3/4x20, same as 8.8" & 9" Ford )
(Dorman 81053 does not fit, it is 7/8x14)

Hope this helps you avoid my missteps and keeps your Jag on the road.

Jeff

Some of what I have been looking for.

Still looking for pinion and carrier bearings for 2000 S-type 4.0 diff.

I am using my 2005 XJR pinion gear so need the crush sleeve and nut.

In other posts, the early S-Type differential was reported to be the same as the Lincoln LS. Rockato shows the same pinion bearings for the 2003 Lincoln LS as I cited above. I would start with these part numbers for the pinion bearings and crush sleeve.

The carrier bearings will probably be the LM603049 (bearing) and for the race, you'll just have to read the numbers once you get it apart.

Are you planning to put a 2005 pinion in the 2000 carrier? Are you also transplanting the 2005 ring gear?

Thank you Jeff.

I plan on putting in a Ford 8.8" 28 spline LSD. I have purchased a used 2005 XJ diff and will use the pinion gear and ring gear from that.

I am using information on : https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/j...ntials-134733/

I want to keep my XJR driveable as long as possible before starting the replacement.

Already run into a snag with the S-Type half shafts.

The Ford LSD is not scheduled to be delivered until January late! Did not notice that when I ordered it.

I originally wanted a Quaife 34W but Quaife no longer make it and sold all inventory to some private individual in the U.K.

I cannot help you however since you resurrected this thread I will point out that the Ford LSD would NOT fit my differential and I was able to purchase a Quaiffe lsd that did fit.

A lot of incorrect information on these diffs in places along with some correct information.

I did replace bearings with Timken.
