S Type fuel door latch
ok , i have read so many of these pin problems that the door won't latch.
and many of you have replaced it numerous times already, or find some other self made solutions?
is there a recall on those plastic pins? or do they sell them by the box now?
can someone tell me if the dealer is aware of this problem?. i do have the same problem too, and I don't want to change the whole assembly every time this happened (as it seems the whole assembly has to be replaced)
help please?

Out of hundreds or thousands of members a few have had this problem. You may be exaggerating more than a little and of course there's no recall as it's not a dangerous safety-related issue!
Lubrication of the pin assembly is key to making it last. With the heads up from this forum I lubed up the release pin on my 2005 STR several times over the years and now at 95K miles and 8 years of age it is still working perfectly.

Agreed. Since keeping our S-Type's third pin lubed up with white lithium grease for more than four years now, it seems to be holding up. I hit it with a spray or two of grease every three months or so....
Same goes for my wife's XK8. As far as I know, that pin is still the factory one....

My release pin has broken since I bought the car used. I ended up pulling out the metal spring that pushes the door open when the pin is retracted. The door will now close flush and is not very difficult to get open. It isn't locked anymore but I'm not sure that is a real problem as that little pin can't be that difficult to break and the door open if someone is serious about stealing the gas.
Like many other before, my filler cap pin broke on my 2006 S-Type. I have read this and many other forums for advice on replacing the part, but below is how I did it.
Part number XR857532 from British Parts UK (new actuator and pin)
1) Remove 2 x carpet securing screws/clips on inside RHS of boot and pulled back carpet.
2) Remove 4 x securing screws holding electronic unit in place. Then remove/pull electrical connector out of actuator unit
3) Remove rear driver side wheel (UK car) remember car supports - don't rely on jack
4) Remove plastic wheel arch lining. 3 x torqs, 3 x 10mm plastic nuts and 2 x push-in securing pins
5) Look up in arch and locate actuator pin housing at rear of Filler assembly. Note that there are arms with end latches top and bottom attaching the housing to the filler assembly
6) Using 2 screwdrivers, lift the latches on the actuator pin housing and pull it out of the filler cap assembly
7) Go to the boot and remove the actuator and pin housing from behind where the electronics box was
8) Remove the old actuator from the housing and replace with the new one - greasing it well
9) Replace everything in reverse order. I took the opportunity to wash the inside arch and wax-oil it first

A good lubricant for the pin is copperslip. There is no need for velcro or removal of the spring. If you look to the right of the bottom part of the spring you will see a slot in the black plastic. Just twist the bottom part of the spring and push it in to the slot. Job done!
Hei there!
My problem with the latch, is that it won't open. Either I need an assistent to carefully pull the door when pressing the opener from inside, or I have to pull the door while opening from inside the trunk. I have done everything to keep it clean and lubed it. But it still won't open. Everything seems to work.
