You can have the old plugs- if you pay shipping and handling. The guesses so far are WAY WAY OFF.

I debated where to post this and suppose it could be better off in a 'general technical' type place than true 'off topic', but S-type is my 'home' here as well as one of the most active areas . Being that spark plugs and maintenance schedules come up so frequently I thought the info might be interesting to the gang here. Mr. Mod if you wish to move this, please be my guest.

And.. A couple of observations... Platinum plugs, so it's not a Chrysler product Hemi or else the owner is doing a big no, no. Chrysler specifies "standard" plugs only in the Hemi engines.

Also, based on the guesses, the mileage is way up there...so lots and lots of highway mileage...BTW. Changed the wife's Grand Caravan plugs at 60k....Platinum in a 3.8v6 and they looked about like those...And her van is a 2006 as well. Many short trips....

Sooooo.... Remember, how you use it is just as important as mileage when it comes to maintenance.

Mikey: I get that you are trying to make some sort of point with all this...But something that cruises that many miles will actually show less wear in many areas than a vehicle that is just driven short distances daily (like my wife's van that gets less than 10k a year). So, not really applicable to most average drivers.

 

What were MPG, emissions & the cats like with the plugs in that state?

 

If you're asking me... Well, off topic, but then again this thread is more about general maintenance, isn't it? Yes, the van has been getting worse mileage, but emissions are OK from what I've seen but it does also seem sightly less powerful.

The plug change was only step one. I also need to get the fuel injectors cleaned and will change out the O2 sensors as well. I've heard that O2 sensors can be cleaned but I've never had any luck with that. Maybe just not talented enough? I know that changing them out in the past on other cars has helped a lot in the "tune up" area. My main point in doing just plugs at 60k was to get a closer look at things. Since it is a transverse mounted engine in a tight space I'm unable to see the back of things during routine maintenance. In order to do the plugs easily you have to pull the whole cowl section off with the wiper motors and all. Not hard, just tedious. Once out though, you can see everything. It all looked good. No leaks or dirt...

Oh, yea, I'm not forgetting the fuel filter.... Like the confounded "sealed transmission" in a Jag, Chrysler cars only have a fuel filter in the fuel pump itself. No external serviceable filter.. What idiots!

 

How many 02 sensors in the S-type? 2 or 4?

 

Up stream and down stream, two banks. Even the 3.0 has a true dual exhaust. So, a total of 4..

The MPG was no different than the previous 398,000 miles that the car had on these plugs. Emissions or state of the cats is unknown. The owner runs a short and long distance courier business and the car is obviously almost never off the road. Other routine mtce. was done to the vehicle- but for what ever reason the owner did not do the plugs at the recommended interval. They were changed only because the owner was visiting a mutual friend in FL who 'insisted' and not due to any starting or driving issues.

I thought some of the motorheads here might enjoy seeing this type of stuff, possibly even put some of the Nervous Nellies' minds at ease.

I've been saying 'car'- it's actually a GM pickup with a 6.0L V8 Vortec petrol/gas engine. The weight makes it a harder duty cycle than our pampered S-Types.

 

Is it quite low compression? The plugs sure look like they would have been causing a poorer burn than designed and that should mean higher emissions, though if they've not been checked (tailpipe 4-gas) I suppose we'll never know.

My suspicion is that over here the plugs would have meant it would fail the MoT due to emissions and thus the plugs would have been changed. (It's a crime to use a vehicle without a valid MoT.)
