Default S Type R Guys, Good Deal?

Hey Guys/Gals

I currently own a X-Type and have been looking for the right S-Type R now for a while. I found this one locally and saw that its listed on eBay as well.

Here's the link firstly -
Jaguar : S-type Jaguar : S-type | eBay

I test drove the car, but I'm not a "str" veteran. When you guys said it has low end power, you weren't joking! The brakes bite so fast and so easily too!

I noticed this car was produced 2004, does that mean it will have the dreaded "lurk"? I drove it hard for about 15 minutes, the needle was in the mid mark for the car temp, to see if I could get any lurk, Did it need to be more than the time I took it out to feel the "lurk"?

Any other things to note or to look out for besides the used car basics?
Is the car priced fairly in your opinion?
Maybe a tech can see some unseen history that I couldn't?
They roughly offered $4-5k for my 2004 x type sport, Was hoping to buy the car for $16k.

Thanks for helping me out and looking to join in on the str ownership.

- Dave

I just had to clean my keyboard. If I could of found one like that I would of been on that. Thats thing is gorgeous. If you can get it for 16k with the mileage I would go for it just on the color with the wheels alone. Maybe try and get them to remove and fill in the holes from that front plate. Hell if you dont like that one I'd trade you. LOL. If you can get it for 16k I'd maybe look at putting your X up for sale and try to sell that outright you never get a good amount trading or taking it to a dealer and may be better off just trying to do it privately. If you get it post up lots of pics.

If you are talking about the transmission lurch then you shouldnt have to deal with that. Its an 05 model even though it shows 2004 so it should be good. I would just check the normal things. Look for coolant leaks, make sure its the pink/orange stuff and not green, basically everything you can find on the site but with those miles you may not have to many problems.

Probably a good car ("facelift" from mid-2004, VIN N13089-on). Be sure the K&N is not over-oiled or expect faults. Fuel gauge Range 37 shows so little gas that the fuel pumps are in danger of running dry - not good if they do as they're fuel-cooled.

I'm being picky. It's likely fine. Depends whether you like the colour.

It won't have fog lamps, if you care, as they became air ducts.

I believe this is the 2nd time auction. I saw this a week or so ago. NICE vehicle!!!

I would try to get them to pay for an extra key. It only shows a picture of 1. The keys are $300.00 and Jaguar has to program.

Good Luck!!!

Ebay's filtered at work so I can't check it out...But...The biggie is the coolant, if there's a leak, it could be a hose, the tank or the under the supercharger leak...Unless it's in the service history, assume you'll need a new alignment brough up to Jaguars revised specs to prevent it from eating the insides of your tires...

Thanks guys for help and guidance! I'm trying to bid it up to see the reserve. It's a clean car inside, and the sales guy would not budge under 18k. Thanks Joycesjag for the extra key missing, I could hustle them down a little bit. Should I check where the spare tire is for evidence of water? I live 30 mins away from eurotoys, so it gives me an extra excuse to buy her. Thanks again guys!

Always check for evidence of water in the trunk of any S-Type you are considering. If there is indeed a leak, re-seated trunk seals (or new trunk seals) may very well be required. Water has also been known to leak in around the taillight assemblies....

With the battery in the trunk (as well as some of the electronic modules), any water pooling in the trunk can play electrical havoc with these cars. Ensure that the trunk is as dry as possible....

That car has made several rounds on EBay. Be tough on the price. STR's don't sell at all.

They will get tired of listing it over and over so don't budge too much on price; eventually they will come down to what you are willing to pay. $16k is a very reasonable buy for that car, $18k+ would be too much IMO, plus you will have to add all their fees and then taxes and registration. I bought my '03 a month ago with 45k miles and paid well under that price. Granted, mine doesn't have navigation and isn't the more desirable 05+, but was still a 1 owner and had all 3 keys and was just as "clean."

Exotic Motors is a really Good Outfit. I've purchased a couple of cars from them in the past. Start looking to see where you can also get an extended warranty

Here's a couple more

The fender "r" is supposed to be under the side marker. Was the badges moved or was it hit? Pop the hood, check for tape lines inside the fenders and uniform orange peel.

Worth checking - but the badges were factory-fitted or omitted depending on the customer's order. Many were ordered debadged.

It's also possible the badges were stolen by non-STR owners...

Bet ya $10 bucks she was hit. Ya can't completely rely on CarFax. My 03 STR had a clean report but it turned out it sustained a hit to the front left. The "R" badge above the marker light is light evidence of this. Snoop around under the hood, behind the fender skirts, and front bumper facia. I'd still take her...@ $16k max.

Isn't the "S-Type" emblem also missing on the left rear of the trunk lid ???

Thanks again guys for all the tips and ideas you have given me. I think I will take one more close look at it in person to check all the aboved mentioned. My x type is hitting 75k miles and extended is running out. I remember one member saying the x type is the cheapest jag to buy but most expensive to maintain, hit the nail on the head with that.
The first black str that Docuzzie posted is a great deal, but I swore to myself never to buy a black car again. I'll report back to you guys after my visit tommorow. Thanks!

i know of a nice 2003 silver one for under 12k that isnt too far from you.......with 58k miles on it, and it only needs some minor things to be 100%.
