S-Type Wheel Alignment
Is it recommended to have a wheel alignment done only at a dealership. I've read some posts that the local shops don't have the correct numbers for a proper alignment. I am located South of Orlando, Fla.
Agreed, follow Brutal's alignment recommendation. I keep a printout of it in my owners manual and on the rare occasions I need my S-Type's wheels aligned, I insist the indy shop I use follows Brutal's specs. They have kept my car tracking dead-on true and all four tires wearing evenly....
Thanks fellas. I'm not yet well versed in the use of this site, I've looked everywhere I know how to find Brutal's numbers but no luck. Not sure what a "long thread" is and I don't see a "how to" section anywhere. Please clarify (teach) for me.
Here's what Brutal's alignment recommendation essentially says to do:
1. Set the rear toe first, using the shop machine's listed specs for your particular car.
2. Next, set the caster and camber using the shop machine's listed specs for your particular car. The front negative camber should be as close as possible to "even" in order to prevent the wheels from pushing from one side to the other.
3. Finally, set the front toe-in as follows: For each front wheel, the more toe-in towards +.13, the better. Combined front toe-in should be +.26. This prevents excess wear on the inside tread of all four tires which is typically what occurs when front toe-in is set to the original Jaguar factory specs. When setting front toe-in, make certain that the steering wheel is locked dead-center. Otherwise you will wind up with an off-center steering wheel after the alignment is completed.
As I mentioned, handing a printout of these instructions to my alignment tech and asking him to follow them to the letter has always worked for me....
