I've moved your question from New Member Area - Intro a MUST to S-Type forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

It does sound like the inertia switch, but if sure it's not then the next thing might be any of the items in the safety interlock against engine start. There's a lengthy no start PDF somewhere on here.
It might even be a bolt is loose/out for the trans shifter cable (side of trans, access under car).

All the inertia switch does is cut power to the fuel pump upon impact. If the engine won't turn over you have a different problem.
Be aware that the impact might have moved your shifter cable. Take a look and make sure the P is lighted on the shifter. Also try moving the shifter to N before starting and see if anything changes.
Get under the car and check the 2 small bolts holding the cable to the transmission. They are known to loosen with regular driving and yours could have been on the edge before the impact.

It's obviously not 'basic electronics' then. If the engine won't turn over and you can't move the shift lever out of park, follow tbird6's advice about the shift cable.
It was mine, too - 5 mins to check...
Of course if it's an insurance job some places don't hurry and may even find ways to increase the cost. The dealer is an independent business, not owned by Jaguar. Not all are as they ought to be.
