Exclamation Shifter is out of Alignment, Any way to fix this problem?

I have a 02 S-type 4.0. My Gear Shifter is out of an alignment, in order for my car to engage in Drive, i have to put it to the "4th Gear" in order to Drive. And to go in Reverse, I have to put it in "Neutral" in order to Reverse.

Is there a way to fix the shift linkage or replace it? And also is there a way to fix the Gear from getting stuck in Park? Thanks

Sounds like your shift cable is streched - time to replace. Or your shifter assembly could be issue plagued but I'm leaning towards the shift cable being stretched. Also would be a good idea to check the cable at both the shifter and trans to ensure the bolts are tight. Additionally, the shifter getting stuck in Park (especially on hills or inclines) is common. They have a shifter block assembly (XR817754) made in aluminum (OES - made of plastic) that will fix this issue.

For now, Use your parking brake after shifting to Park when the car is parked on an incline or hill.

Check your cable quick before you get stranded. Seriously, like abonano stated, the alignment issue is very likely cable related. If the bolts are loose (VERY likely) and they happen to fall out, you are suddenly up poops creek without a shifter....

Worry about the shifter block at a later date. That has nothing to do with the alignment issue. The block issue results in a broken block when the shifter binds and is forced into gear. Not what you are listing. By all means replace it to be safe, but seriously address the cable issue ASAP.

+1 on JOsworth's direction on addressing the shifter cable first and quickly Prodigy215. As far as the shifter block is concerned - you can get that off of Ebay - plan on spending a little over $100 for it. Thanks...

Before you do anything get the car up in the air and check the shift cable to the transmission attachment. The later 2003 cars with the 6 speed transmission have this problem but it's not reported on the early cars. So it's a stretch but something to check before ordering parts.

If everything looks good underneath then the cable becomes a suspect but I would also take the console apart (Because it's easy!) And inspect how things move.

Do you have the JTIS so you can do more research? It's free on this site.

Worth posting in a new thread (or a JTIS one) but please explain the words - looks like German? We have people who've really put effort in to getting JTIS to work and they may be willing to help. Post your OS details, too.

Probably easier to fix your JTIS!

I don't think it adjusts there but in any case the usual advice is to replace once it's stretched I think.

The JTIS i tryed reinstalling it and everything. I've been trying to locate the Shift Cable under the car to see if the two bolts are loose but i cant locate the cable. Is there a picture or diagram that shows where its at?

Another option is to subscribe to Alldata, it's not a lot of money and you get a forum discount, the info is pretty much the same as JTIS.

Anyway for now have a shufty at this

Lie under car. Look up at trans. In case that's too tough, take to competent shop.

JAGUAR STYPE R: Shifter stuck in Park; solution: turn engine on with shifter on PARK. Keep foot on brakes. Red blinking light will appear on PARK. Keep foot on brakes until RED BLINKING LIGHT BECOMES STEAD-NO BLINKING! Once light on P is steady, with foot still on brakes, car will easily shift into any gear; in my case Reverse as I have to back out of my garage. EASY FIX. Have tried it for week and IT WORKS EVERY TIME!!

It looks to be signalling a fault that you're in effect ignoring. Tends not to end well....

I'm replacing my cable this weekend. Is it just unbolt and replace with new one or is there something else I need to do? Like shift to a certain gear or anything like that.
Thanks
