Default Shifting Module

my 2001 Stype has an issue where it shifts hard between 1 and 2...it kinda hesitates a bit. The dealer said that it is the shifting module. I'm glad its not the actual tranny but What is that? I have never heard of it before.

I wonder if they meant the solenoid pack?:

Are you getting any fault codes? I had a recurring transmission fault code (P0745?) on my '02. This solenoid pack took care of it.

A very messy job, as you have to drop the transmission pan for access and then work overhead. Overall not too difficult, but the hardest part was jacking the car up level on all four corners, high enough to get underneath for the refill procedure. Not a lot of room in back to raise the car and get jackstands underneath, too.

Not sure of your experience level, but a good transmission shop could knock this out in a couple of hours, so the labor charge shouldn't be too bad.

Almost forgot to mention:

The 5R55N transmission in the early models is a VERY common unit. It's a variant of a very popular Ford transmission, used in several bazillion vehicles. Any competent transmission shop can handle any repairs. You typically wouldn't need the dealer to do it.
