Lightbulb Should i Buy this 2005 S-type R

There is this dealer selling a 2005 Jaguar S-Type R for $7,500 recently reduced to $6,500 he has had it in his showroom since October 2012. the only thing is it has 202,000 KM's. the condition it really good, seats look new still and the engine bay is really clean. the only thing that worries me is the KM's. I can probably get him down to at least $5,000 total. I dont know if i should buy it or not?

Thanks you help is much appreciated

I don't know, looks kind of punked with the blacked out windows. No telling what prior owners may have done to it. Have you run the Carfax on it?

Anything that goes wrong with that car are going to be costly, particularly since it has "special" suspension (i.e., eCATS) and brakes (Brembo brake package featuring 14.3-inch-diameter vented front discs, 12.9-inch solid rear rotors, and four-pot aluminum calipers).

And the mileage is pretty high...

been following this one for a long time now, doesn't seem to have sold despite its ever dropping price,

i haven't checked it out in person, but i figure it has some small issue or history with it that's keeping it from selling, besides the 200k (120k miles) in mileage of course,

looks clean, but might need some immediate repairs of preventative maintenance for sure, not to mention the original 6 speed ZF gearbox is probably on the way out if it isn't already...

basically, im sure the car has some issues that you don't immediately see in the ad, go check it out in person and let us know!

One look at the vendor's description says it all. To quote:

"202,000 km, unfit, not E-tested, no maintenance records, not represented as being road-worthy, may require substantial investment, may not be registerable in present condition...".

Buy the car for $1500, set aside $7500 and ask Vance850 how much to fix it up.

Yup, It's all in the details.

Wonder what's wrong with it?

Thought I'd chime in on this one. I actually was just about to jump on a plane and go take a look at this one a few weeks ago, when it was at 9000. Called them up and after talking to the guy I kinda changed my mind. Sounded really sketchy. First time I called the phone just rang and rang, no answer or machine, odd for dealer. Second, when I did get a hold of him I asked what I thought were standard questions like "Do you have a carfax or vin you could give me to check it out, any service history, etc". He immediately went on the defensive saying things like "why would I give you the vin" or "you can see the carfax when you get here". Red flags in my view. I personally wouldn't worry about the km's (my wife's 03 STR is at about 210Km and runs like a top) as long as you diy everything. However, like has been mentioned here, there could be issues with the trans if it hasn't been serviced yet, or possible engine problems (coolant hose under the blower anyone?) at this mileage. But, despite all that, you have to see it in person and drive it to know for sure. Even with problems, for the right price I would still go for it, but then again I own one of these in this mileage range and diy and have already gone through a lot of the common repairs so I kinda know what this car would be like.
It does look pretty clean though, and that is what got my attention in the first place. My advice, proceed with caution and know what you could be getting into.
I'm actually going to be in Ottawa for a conference in two weeks and am considering a drive down to Toronto to look at a car, and if I'm there was also considering taking a look at this one too just for the heck of it. If it is clean and nothing major wrong or maybe an accident in the past, I would throw an offer of say $4000, take it or leave it. If this has been for sale for this long, he needs to move it.

To be fair, its required by law the dealer puts that foreboding disclaimer phrased in specifically that way when listing a vehicle that doesn't come with a valid safety and emissions test.

So, although the disclaimer makes it sound like an unsafe wreck overdue for the scrap yard, it may just be some small simple repair that is causing it to fail one of its required inspections.

+1 on the disclaimer. That has to go up for everything. Was looking at a BMW 760li a while ago, still had extended warranty on it and about 75Km, and guess what, that disclaimer was still there!

I just called that dealer asking about the 05 STR, went like this

"im calling about the 05 jaguar s type r"
"yes still available"
"does it come with safety and etest?"
"no, no safety or etest"
"what does it need to pass?"
"umm, im not sure actually"
"well, what issues does this car have, do you know?"
"umm can i call you back in 2 minutes?"
"... sure..."
hangs up right there before even getting my information... not looking like i'll be getting a call back...

been looking for a cheap 05 STR as a parts/donor car, maybe ill offer them a pittance for this one,

Now, they have peaked my curiosity. What is actually wrong with this car so that nobody will buy it! Must be something big, or possibly small, but seems like a big thing to the average buyer. If it's still there in two weeks (my guess is it will be!) I think I'll have to head out there and have a go with it just to make my brain stop wondering! lol

nav, with the black on black with aluminum trim sure is nice combo for an STR,

this one just popped up recently, 04 with decently low mileage, only $9k...

2004 Jaguar S-TYPE R Supercharged 400 hp - Ottawa Cars For Sale - Kijiji Ottawa Canada.

this red one has been up for quite some time now, looks clean, but pricey at $14k, doesn't mean he wouldn't entertain an offer for $10k now would he...? hmm

And this low mileage 06, super pricey at $27k, no pictures, but description sounds clean, although not sure about it having 'brembo brakes' seeing it's an 06... but you never know...

It has the 2003-2004 rims. I wonder why they changed from the 2005 Vulcan wheels?

Like I said, between that and the blacked out rear windows I think it's been punked.

I noticed the rims before too. I think that this is the kind of car you would have to pic up for next to nothing and plan to sink a few thousand into it to get it up to speed. Not an impossible task, but one that the buyer would have to be ready to do.
Based on what I've had to do to mine I would expect to have to do the following:
- brakes, rotors and pads
- suspension (front and back) control arms, vertical links, toe links, etc, maybe shocks
- DCCV
- at least a tranny fluid and pan change, if not more
- probably hose under blower
- valve cover gaskets
- various little things that I can't think of at the moment

Without a service history this would be my immediate list of things to do.

Part of me is thinking something major. Don't know why, but just a feeling since the car seems to look pretty clean but things like engine lights or RP popping up would be noticeable to any buyer. Things like suspension might go unnoticed by the average buyer, heck, I'm replacing all the rear control arms and links on my STR cause they are bad, and honestly I would never have know if I hadn't checked them. If you go to check it out, or if anyone does, see if you can get the car scanned. Anyone want to bet a P1000 shows up at the very least.

Just checked the website again. Noticed that the rear badging is missing (the S-type and R). Collision possibly? At first I though debaged, to go with the blacked out windows, but the R's are still on the fenders. Also a thought on the tires. Hard to tell, but could be winters on a set of old rims. That's what I have, winters on the 03-04 Zeus rims and summers on 05 Vulcans. Maybe the guy dumped the car or traded it with the winters and kept the summers for a new car? Again, hard to tell from pics, but the tred does kinda look like a winter one. But I could just be crazy.

Just been looking at the showroom on Google Street view, it's right next door to a mechanics so I'm sure if what is wrong was a simple / cheap fix it would have been done

I bought my 2004 S-Type 4.2 from this dealer and found them to be OK to deal with.Basically they sell used cars traded in to the new car dealerships, which are not good enough for the dealers used car operations,eg high mileage, damage history, poor cosmetics or whatever. They were quite open with their information--copy of the carfax, service history, where traded, price with and without safety certification etc.

I was in their showroom two weeks ago to look at an 2004 XJR.I had a look at the 2005 S Type R while I was there.Personally I would not buy it at any price--basically it looks like a a well used, worn out car--just scruffy all around.
