I just purchaced a 2000 s type with a 4.0 Engine. Love the car and could use a few tips.
1) When I let the car idle at normal operating temp,"in the middle of the temp guage" and in park, it idles good for a minute or two.
but when it is in drive after about 10-15 seconds it starts hesitating or misfiring. But it drives excellent full power at highway speeds. But when at a stop light or sign it wants to miss.
No check engine light on, carb cleaner around the back or around the intake will effect the idle. The valve cover gaskets are leaking.
I did replace all spark plugs with motorcraft o.e and replace the #7 coil. as well as the bank 2 post cat o2 sensor"because I had a cyl 7 misfire code and bank 2 catalyst inif. code."
So my question is
what is your thoughts on the misfire/rough idle
Does anyone have a how to on the valve cover gaskets
Does anyone have a how to on the intake gaskets and what else should be done at the same time. like the elbow. Thanks for any help.

Can it show datastream at all? Fuel trims specifically?
Take off the air boot from the throttle body and see if it is filthy?
Also the cat ineffciency code normally would indicate cat failure.
How many miles you have on vehicle?
Can you measure temperature from each tail pipe? Would be better if you have
infrared thermometer and measure cat temp.

The car has 133,000 miles. I am picking up a digital infrd. temp today. I will let you know what the fuel trim reads. Thanks for the tips.

I have experienced this problem with other cars, by the way you described it, it sounds like a MAF sensor problem..

The reason I brought up datastream was for the fuel trims. If when you drive it the fuel trims jump to 20% or so, then I would definitley go MAFS. If not, then more to figure out.

And the winner is .......... MAF! Nice job guys. Picked up a used one for 30.00 off a parts car and it runs fantastic. Now to figure out the cold interior problem and I should be able to drive this thing for a while eh?
