Default Throttle Body repair

Does anyone have any experience with repairs to the throttle body. i don't want to spend $400 just to rebuild the device or $1500 to replace it, has anyone ever attempted the repair/rebuild it themselves?

I understand it's a very high precision device. What do you know (or think) is wrong with yours?

People have sometimes (fairly rarely) cleaned them.

Pay real care it's sealed against damp let alone water ingress or you WILL have problems.

Im sure it's a specific spot in it's position when the car has an issue. ive worked with high end printers at HP and they use an encoder disc to determine position of certain parts and i'm very certain that is how this works because of that knowledge and my background in electronics (encoder disc's or strips are the only current way to determine position accurately). When the printers had problems determining position, we cleaned the encoder disc and the issue resolved. I'm hoping that is the case here.

So what occurs? At what revs/speed? What's led you to the TB rather than anything else? Do you get DTCs or MIL?

Have you cleaned its butterfly and associated parts?

Don't they just use a potentiometer?

IIRC, there are multiple pots, for redundancy.

The Pots are used at the gas pedal and not the throttle body. I haven't cleaned the 'butterfly' yet in the Throttle Body. When I press down on the pedal, the car at a certain point(s) acts as though I weren't pressing down on it, ie. lack of consistent acceleration at those point(s). Sometimes the car will display the engine fault message when it has that issue with the acceleration at those certain point(s) and the maintenance light has come on from time to time and I had the code read from when it was triggered: P1584, an issue with the throttle body.

The JTIS diagram shows the pots I stated. That code doesn't have to be the TB itself (might be wiring/connector) but probably is. Moisture already in it would be one suspect. Still could be worth cleaning it.

Default Throttle Body Question

I have a 2002 Type S 4.0. Here is some background on the issue: recently had new plugs installed and one coil replaced; have had engine overheat (according to gauge) on three occasions ... pull over, turn off and resume with no more problems - mechanic (independent not dealer) suspects thermostat issue. Check engine light came on shortly after coil replaced; Fail Safe Engine Mode comes on occasionally and briefly then goes off for weeks at a time. Had opportunity to take to Jag dealer and have diagnostic run ... Fail Safe Engine Mode came on en route to the dealer. Code P1585 came up - throttle body ($3000.00 at dealer). Service Mgr said could be wiring or could be the actual throttle body ... did not have time for further diagnostic that day and live 3 hours from dealer. A friend told me he had similar problem with his Chrysler ... said he used a throttle body cleaner (spray) and fixed problem.
Does anyone have suggestions? Has anyone used the spray - and if so, how is it done? This is our only working car and we cannot afford a $3000.00 (or even $1000) repair.

Hang on - look up and read about P1585 in the CORRECT codes PDF (FAQs or JTIS). As far as I can see it's not the TB.
