Tire Question.....
Well I am in need of some new back tires. I believe my alignment may be off so after getting new tires it will be checked. My question is anyone run different tires front and rear and how does it run?? I had to run different front and rears in my last car and it seemed fine but the STR has a lot more power. I would just get the same thats on the front again but they are on back order till mid Dec and I'm planning a 800 mile one way trip for Thanksgiving that I dont want to risk driving with balding tires. This is the reason for the 2 seperate on the last car. I had to get tires after a near blowout and had to take what I could get at that time. My fronts are Bridgestone Potenza RE960A/S which I could get the rears locally but they are way overpriced here. I can order them and install them myself like I do all my tires for way cheaper just cant find anyone who has them online. I was looking at staying with Bridgestone Potenzas but going with the RE760's. The only difference I see is the treadwear is 340 A A instead of 400 AA A of the RE960s plus they are actually alot cheaper which is a bonus. Anyone got any suggestions. Also the RE760's are Ultra High Performance Summer Tires where as the 960's are all season High Performance. I am in NC so it doesnt snow here except maybe once a year. Arent the Summer Tires supposed to only be driven above a certain outside temp. It does get cold here so not sure if that would cause a problem. I open to any ideas people have and any comments from people that do run different front and rears and their observations.
I have had 3 very high performance cars. I came across General Exclaim UHP's and i have never switched away. The second i bought the STR thats the first thing i did. I got the rears for 162 each online. Awesome tire, great reviews awesopme tread pattern and unbeatable price.
Fergs03R - What kind of tread life do see from the UHP's? I currently run Evo V12's and I am just coming up on the wear bars. I don't tear about spinning the tyres but 8 months of freeway milage feels a little soon.
Vance580 - Prior to the Evo's I had mixed front to back with Bridgstones on the rear. In the dry it was okay but in the wet Mr. Toad's wild ride. I can't remember what front's I was running.

I was up looking for a while trying to decide what to do. I came across these Yokohama ADVAN S.4. The tread pattern is really close to the Potenzas on the front and they are also all season high performance. The specs are very similar so I think I may go with this tire. They make them in the front size also so down the road when the fronts go bald I can just these as a replacement. I think these might work for me.

Just got off the phone with tirerack and they said with the 2 different tires being so similar I shouldnt have any problem running the Yokohamas on the rear. I went ahead and placed my order for them and will report back my observations once I'm running it this way for a little while.
Yikes!! Yokohama's are notorious for making noise and poor tread life. I had those on my Merc S500 AMG on the rears and they made a lot of road noise while driving. I kept them on till it was time to change them out; plus they don't last as long as other brands. I found that the Continental ExtremeContact DW held up very nicely;very quiet and excellent grip. check it out http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

I had already ordered before your post. I may run into problems running those on the rear since its a max performance summer tire. From what I've been reading the summer tires get a little hard when the temps drop so I would really feel the difference in the winter since the tires almost have 2 different temp ranges they operate in. My options were pretty limited since I needed an all season high performance tire. I also wanted to try and match the treads close so I'm not hydroplanning at just front or back. Once I install them I'll get the alignment checked and if they last me till the front wear I'd be happy with that since then I'll just get all 4 new so I have more choices. Thanks for the recommendation I may look into those when I need all 4 cause then I could just switch to a summer tire.
, as you could see those Continental Tires had the highest rating from customer reviews at 9.0 as compared to other high performance tires. But anyhow do let us know what you think of the Yokohama'sI personally tried all the major brands on my cars, and the best so far in order are the Continentals , Pirelli's, BridgeStone Potenza's then lastly Michelin Pilots. Hey thats just my opinion

I replaced the Bridgestone stockers on my 370Z with Hankook Ventus V12 Evos and couldn't be happier with them, especially for the price. I am looking at a 2003 STR and it has the same tires, brand new!

Does anyoneknow if 8x18 S Type wheels with 245/40-18's will fit an STR?
I know the STR has 9.5 x 18 275/35-18 in the rear. I cant find the S type offset, I think it's 60 if thats what the number next to the 8x18 means that is stamped into the inside spoke on the rim. I think the STR has 49 in front and 51 rear? I know the bolt pattern is the same. Just need to know if this will fit for the winter
I want to swap out the exisiting summer tires with Conti all seasons
Thanks

On the General tires topic - I don't have General car tires but I do run General Grabber AT2's on my Jeep and my Rover, as do several friends and they are fantastic, a high quality tire for a low price. I'd buy Generals for any car with confidence.
That being said, I love the ContExtremeContact DWS on my SAAB 9-3 turbo. They are very good on pavement and in the wet, and acceptable in light snow.
I'll be shopping in the spring for new meats on the R....probably look at the DWS if I can find them.
