Exclamation Torque Converter!!! Plz HELP!!!!

Recently the gearbox failure light turned on, in my 03 s-type. I took it 2 the dealer and they say my torque conv. needs 2 be replaced. There charging me $3700 hundred 2 replace it . They say the part alone is $1800. Does any1 knew anything about this or have any suggestions on getting this fixed? Kinda dont have the $3700 just laying around right now.
Thanks 4 all the help

Don't panic! It may not be so expensive as you think/are being told!
Carefully outline the problems and symptoms here, the mileage, the type of driving you do (enthusiastic vs. sedate) any towing of caravans-trailers, any previous servicing of gearbox, assuming its auto. Does it still drive or is it a no-go? Then see. There are plenty contributors here who can help.

p.s. In any event, always get three quotes for a job, never go for the first one without checking.

More info is needed... Codes, specific drive train.

They have failed..Some users here have had it happen but usually in the R.

Is your VIN after M45255?

Generally it would be much cheaper to go to a tranny shop for a fix BUT that's IF it needs fixing. Yes, we need more details as there are some rare-ish faults which appear to be autobox but aren't.

Hey guys thanks 4 all the help. But yeah, the vin # is m75330 and it has 61335 miles on it. I dont really drive the hell out of it, but it is my daily driver. No towing or anything and Ive never had any work done 2 it. The code they gave me is p0741
Im planning on taking 2 a tranny shop during the week 2 see what they say tho. But is there usually a fault with these things on this car?

OK, you have the ZF 6HP26 6-speed autobox.

There are at least 2 things you can search on: P0741 and also you're in the VIN range for TSB S307-13

Sorry to say you may well need the TC replacing BUT at the sort of cost involved I'd be very tempted to make sure your car has the current PCM and TCM calibrations (roughly: software versions) and have the TCM's adaptions cleared and re-learnt i.e. TSB JTB00071 v2 (aka JTB00071v2)

A jag franchise can do those but I'd be inclined towards a tranny shop at least for a quote about a new TC. You might still need the new calibrations afterwards if you don't have them already (in case you have an elm327 OBD tool I can have a go at talking you through how to find what calibrations you now have).
