Default Transmission, differential or all together

Hi everyone, just came home from driving on 03 STR and had very bad noise under the car. Basically it disappears when I shift from drive to neutral while car is rolling so first guess was transmission or diff. From the first dark checking I notice driveshaft free play a lot, center bearing looks fine, axles, wheel bearings seems to be fine. I was kinda surprised, but I can spin my rear wheels while transmission is in "P" position. If this thread is exist already, please send me the link. Thanks

How many kilometres/miles on the vehicle?

There are several things that can cause noises, such as the torque converter, broken parking pawl, etc.

It has 155k miles on the clock. But let me ask stupid question, if the car in P position and I can still spin my rear wheels It means that I can already start removing my transmission, right?

Not necessarily - I suspect - e.g. if the trans shifter cable has stretched might that occur?

I was wondering about those infamous loose bolts where the shift cable attaches to the transmission.

When you move the shift lever to Park, does the letter P illuminate on the bezel? Or is R illuminated? The P, R, N, and D indications are feedback from the transmission. If R is still illuminated with the lever in P, that would point to a problem with the cable.

Some details in this thread, but be careful because it covers both early and late models:

Uff da! Wasn’t thinking about that. If you have both rear wheels off the ground, transmission in park, and the parking brake off, if you spin one wheel forward, the other spins in reverse due to the differential.

What happens if you put the transmission in park on a gentle grade, and release the foot brake and parking brake? Does the car roll then?

Thank you for all replies. When I dropped my car back to the ground it didn't roll with transmission in park and brake release. After driving and checking that sound I finally figured its gonna be a differential. I'll remove it to see what's exactly need to be changed. Already found few threads about diffs and bearings so thanks again for replies.
