Default Is the Transmission Going?

I just drove a relative's 2003 S-Type 3.0 from Florida to Wisconsin. I noticed that when I come to a complete stop, it takes a few seconds before the transmission will gear down to 1st -- if I step on the gas before it does gear down, it will clunk down and then take off. Also, when I brake to a complete stop, it will gear down and jump forward, sometimes twice!

Does this (gulp) mean that the transmission is about shot?

Any suggestions?

Nah. Classic S-type lurch.

Jaguar S-Type ZF Gearbox Lurch fault

See the dealer for a transmission reflash, very goodprobability of it being eliminated or greatly reduced. My car has a minor cases that apparently cannot be cured, I just drive around it.

I think I really messed up my zf6hp26 I didn't know u had to add more fluild with the engine running. I drianed It i don't know how much I got out, I pumped 3qt of fluild in until it over flowed cold. I plugged it started car shifted threw gears seamed fine turned off car took plug back out and toped off. Pluged it and went on merry way driving.ran smooth as silk for 3 days this morning it started shifting funny slipping a tiny bit between 3and 4th didn't think much of it. On the way home I stopped on incline at light and heard Avery quite low whine. When I got home I read the right way to fill it. Needless to say I'm have chest pins over this NO MORE DRIVING CARI will put the right aamount of fluild in the right way tomorrow. My ques didn't I fry my transmission it now whines u can only hear it faintly under the car with it running. If I fill it right will it be ok I drove 100 to 150 with maybe 2 to 3 qtz low. No fauilt codes nothing just the whining it still dries good just shifts harder and.25 rpm spikes between gears when cold like a small slip.

It's not cooked. The ZF trans. needs 6.5-7 qt. of ZF fluid. 3 qts. shy will not allow it to generate enough pressure. Properly fill her pronto.

How much will that cost? Assuming the dealer is willing to that. And, what does "reflash" mean? Is this what I should ask the dealer about? (I got this from your link that you posted above - thanks!)

TSB S307-17

Drifting of program for adaptive learning. Now involves both engine AND gearbox reprogramming to address customer concern of harsh transmission shifts, particularly 3 - 2, 2 -1 roll out and 1-2 up-shifts

The adaptive shift strategy drifting over time causing higher than normal clutch pressures.

To eliminate the issues outlined in the summary the transmission adaptions must be cleared and the Transmission Control Module (TCM) and the Engine Control Module (ECM) should be re-configured using the Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS) with software release JTP 759/35 or later. Should a customer express concern, follow the Service Instruction outlined below.

Thanks a bunch. If it's truly the "lurch" then it seems like I don't have to worry too much about it.

Mike

With more fluid the whine will stop.

Maybe $200? Dunno. Mine was done years ago under warranty but it's an hour of labour or so. 'Reflash' means update the computer software.

Just mention the TSB by number, they might be surprised that there's car still around that were not done.

OldMike, I think Mikey is right, and you should check TSB S307-17, because it mirrors your problems.

I got rid of nearly all my lurch problems with a change of tranny fluid, pan, sleeve, filter and bolts. But, the lurch has not completely gone, and I have been driving around the problem ever since. Why? Because I took my car twice to a Jag dealer, and each time spoke to a "senior" mechanic who had just returned from a "training course" where he was advised that there was a small chance that the tranny would not respond and would in fact be damaged beyond repair. Replacement cost over $4000.

Well, of course I hesitated. Now I have re-read the TSB and my VIN is right in mid-range. You can see where the TSB says to act "only if there is a customer complaint". I have yet to hear of a single case on this forum where the tranny re-flash led to disaster, so I plan to take TSB S307-17 to the dealer and just say "do it".

They're supposed to have learnt to hook up an auxiliary power supply (sort of intelligent battery charger) during any reflash, to protect against flattening your battery and to make sure the volts stay high (which the modules need especially during a reflash). Beyond that a reflash should just work. The vital point is that it must not be interrupted such as by volts going low.
