Default Transmission Issues

I’ve had my 05 STR for a little over a year now, but the transmission has always had its issues. I’ve heard of the lurch but this seems different. First the car always has a jerk whenever it’s full throttle. it’ll jerk then go. sometimes the traction control light pops up then it goes. but it’ll have the same jerk if i turn the DSC off. Next whenever it shifts it kind of pulls your forward then shifts. kind of hard shifting then goes into the next gear. same with full throttle then it’s a sudden jerk to 4th gear to 5th then 6th. Some days it’s fine and shifts normal but some days it doesn’t. some times it won’t downshift in a high gear at WOT. And yesterday if i go on a long drive or something the Transmission Fault light pops on and if you turn the car off right away and cut it back on it goes away. Battery is good but any guesses on anything?

Without looking to see if any dtc's have been logged, it could be anything.

Have seen issues with TCM/Valve Body assembly, could be a speed sensor, etc.

Read all codes from at least: PCM, ABS, TCM.

Check fuel trims.

Chances are the trans is long overdue a full service, too.

IDS/SDD, or an enhanced code reader like an iCarsoft i930, or LR-II/2.0 .

IDS/SDD is dealer level diagnostic - you'll need to pay for access to the software or find someone who has it, an independent shop maybe. Dealer will charge normal diagnostic , around 1 hour at whatever their rate is

There are aftermarket code scanners out there for just reading DTC's.

As for the adaptation clear, IDS/SDD software would do this, or you can try disconnecting the battery for half hour or so and carry out a road test as you would normally drive.

Definitely look to invest in a decent code scanner though

if you just need to read codes you pay $40 for a chinese mongoose cable, download SDD from the JLR website and patch it. if you want to do more get a real cable like da-dongle\vci.

Battery disconnect will clear the learned values in the PCM (*) but alter nothing in the TCM.

(*) and be aware it will also clear the OBD monitors which are examined e.g. in smog checks

Better by far to read codes and see what they may suggest
Don't clear them at this stage.

The attached should answer many of your questions. Clearing the adaptions is one thing, but getting them reset without the SDD software and another person is not easy. There is also a connection sleeve that always leaks and has been known to cause electrical problems in the transmission.

This link talks about the service procedure. The ZF fluid and the Mercon SP are the only actually approved fluids (ZF allowed Ford to use the Ford name on one of their transmissions in a European Ford and Motorcraft created the fluid under their name).

Yes follow CCC's thread as posted above. It's one of the best out there on your 6 speed ZF an oldy but goody. 5 years running and 200 posts to that thread. It was an epic one for sure!
I would be worried about fluid level but a full service/fluid change is much better.
Also we now now Mercon SP is the exact same fluid as Lifeguard6. So should be easy to find.

If you want to go down the SDD path take a look at this long and winding thread! I have it and use it but it's not real easy or very friendly to use.

This link can be helpful to know more about your transmission, but beware that these guys are into fixing or replacing the valve body even for simple things. In my case I spoke to them as someone, thinking they were doing me a favor, had erased by TCM adaptions and I was having some difficulty getting them back, but thanks to ZF service line help and "BRUTAL" I got them back in order.

So read with that caution in mind.
