Default Transmission slip issue

The car has 155,000 miles and have had no transmission issues. We unknowingly had a leak in a transmission cooler line and lost some transmission fluid. We had a weird shift issue and caused me to check it out. I found the leak and repaired it. I looked online and found instructions for checking fluid level Ford 5R55N transmission
and added fluid to proper level. The shift issue is much better but still exists.

Acceleration works fine from a stop. Assuming that I am traveling at least 25 mph and I let off the throttle, approaching slower traffic or intersection. As long as I come to a complete stop, there is no issue but if prior to stopping, I take off again after slowing to between 5 and 15 mph, it seems to have gone into neutral instead of downshifting. If I give it throttle, it will be in a neutral but eventually it will catch hard into gear. To correct it without the hard slam into gear I can shift into neutral and right back into Drive and it will operate normally. I rechecked fluid level it it is normal. I get no codes and there is no other evidence of this issue under any other operating conditions.

Thoughts and opinions welcomed, absolute definitive answers adored!

Be sure to post an intro into the new members section - there's many threads on this forum that deal with the Ford 5R55N Transmission.

How many miles are on the vehicle and has the trans ever been serviced? Leaks leading to a lower than normal trans fluid level is never a good thing. Kudos to catching the leak and repairing. Do you remember how much fluid you used to refill the trans? What kind of fluid did you use?

If your shift linkage checks out - I would take your Jag to a reputable trans shop and let them check it out.

Let us know how you make out.

Vehicle has 155,000 miles and, based on my info, has had one flush and fill. When I added fluid, I added 1-1/4 quarts of Mercon V. I have looked over the linkage and all seems firm and normal.

I did a flush and fill. There was a small amount of black on the magnet +/- 1/4 teaspoon. The remainder of the pan was clean and the fluid looked and smelled normal. It appears to operate the same.

Maybe its time for a qualified tech to look her over.

Shift solenoids and/or pump may be at fault. Def. allow a tech to check trans.

Yes on a tech checking out the trans, based on mileage and history and the fact it was over a quart low - I wish you the best.

Remember the 5R55N Unit is 9.5 ltrs of ATF Fluid TOTAL - this figure is obtainable from Jaguar's specific data.

You cannot drain all fluid from pan-plug so expect to pull about 8 ltrs out - I recently removed about 10.5 ltrs because of previous owner neglect - way overfilled which might explain my current issues.

The level test is very tricky but also very important. Wait until temp is 100 deg F as stated on fill plug area.

The level method is an achillies heel and is easy to ****-up.

If you're confident laying under a 2 tons of metal and rubber...

I used a pair of vehicle ramps -
reversed up them
removed fill-plug then loosened inner drain-plug.
Started engine and drove off ramps - vehicle now level
Removed inner-plug until dribble stops...

Tighten inner-plug - reverse up ramps to re-install fill-plug.

Took me about 3 attempts before I was satisfied and also noticed I had about 2 ltrs remaining from a 10 ltr drum, i.e. 8 ltrs gone back in + irremovable fluid in brings you to the 9.5 ltr figure.
