Transmission TSB questions

Transmission TSB questions
Good afternoon, I recently picked up my 2000 3.0 from a shop here in Las Vegas. The car was surging durring acceleration. After a thorough 2 day inspection here is what I was told.
There is a TSB out from Jaguar on thisproblem and the fix is an updated valve body, cost $2300 plus labor, but in their opinion the best fix would be to buy a reman transmision, put in the valve body update, and install for a total of $6400. Also there were a few small problems else where, a hose from the coolant resevoir $290 +tax and an o-ring on the intake manifold leaking fluid 187+tax.
Has anyone else come across the surging (Cutting out) problem or the TSB, and do the rest of the quotes sound fair. I am new to Jaguar's, but have always worked on my own vehicles, even my 2003 duramax. I do not know why this car puts me off when I think about working on it.

A bunch of the gang here went to www.alldatadiy.com you can join and get all the bulletins for your car and see how to repair and service stuff on your car.
If it were me, I would hook up my ScanTool and go to "Live Data" let someone else drive the car and then I would see just what is going on. Try manually selecting the gears and see if it surges while locked in a gear.
Surging is usually caused by an engine problem, unless the trans is gear hunting or the convertor is locking and unlocking.

Maybe start with the free TSBs on this site and the previous threads.
Read any codes, you may have one of the common ones such as P0741
Live data sounds like a job for another day.
Sounds like the shop has hardly a clue and/or just thinks you're gullible and will pay a crazy sum. Are they genuinely experts on S-Types? They sound hopeless.
Surging and cutting out don't sound to mean the same - more detail?

desertdad definetly get the codes read, before you ok any work if at all.
I agree with jagv8, you mentioned $187.00 to change an O-ring, well there are 2 that will be needed to be replaced. That right there is a vacuum leak that will make the tranny do all kinds of funky things. Here are 2 links associated with the IMT O-rings:
1) https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ck-pics-49214/
2) https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ics-faq-32135/
The leaking resevoir is not that bad of a replacement as well.

I do hope you got 2 new IMT O-rings vice 1 and $187 is maybe a little steep for that service.....or...you're gonna wanna kick yourself pretty hard when you do start servicing the S-type yourself and see how easy the O-ring swap is....
Get the codes and you'll get lots of help on the surging issue.

Thanks to all for the info, one of the things I forgot to mention the check engine light has only come on once since we bought the car, it said vacuum leak in the fuel system, i changed the gas cap and it cleared itself. After looking at the pictures from Rick I think I think I will tackle the o-rings myself, it is time to get my hands dirty with this car.

job done
OK so I completed the o-ring job, my cross bar had 7 bolts on it, three broke during removal, so they had to be drilled out, replaced them with 5/16 grade 8 bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts. Also I found it was easier with my meat hooks to remove the filter and complete housing. Took the car for a test drive about 20 miles no shudder yet, we will see. Thank you to everyone who posted on this thread.

Rick,
Your posts are really valuable. I have some leakage in that area. In the spring I planned some repairs on the engine.
- new spark plugs
- rocker cover gaskets and boss seals
- replacement knock sensor P0333
- gasket inlet manifold
I have to remember to replace those two o-ring as well, maybe it will solve the leakage completely.
One question, probably you know directly: Do you know where I can find the connector of the knock sensor to the wiring loom engine compartment.
I like to check that first. The error is present only with cold start, engine hot error gone.
Thanks in advance for your answer.

update
OK I will get the car back from the dealership this afternoon, new diagnosis on the sputtering #5 coil pack, I understand this is on the side of the motor where I do not have to remove the intake, but which one is it, as I am going to save a couple hundred and do it myself?
Also the transmission shifting problem is a stretched cable and shift roster, I am having them do the work for $1200, this will also cover the 100,000 mi service, new filter and fluid so I figured it was worth it.
The service writer told me one of the motor mounts and one of the transmission mounts are leaking a little fluidd, but at this time it is not a problem, are these really filled with fluid?
Next job for me the coil pack and a fuel filter (as soon as I find it).

Dad,
The fuel filter is in behind the drivers side wheel arch liner.
You can see a video courtesy of Vance here https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...r-video-40686/

I did when I had the intake off at 42,000 miles. The plugs did not need to be replaced but hey I was in there.
The intake removal or "set aside" really isn't that bad of a job. I can do it in less than 15 minutes (set aside method).
