Default What is it worth?

Hi All,

As I have been chasing down either doing the heads/gaskets or engine replacement on my wifes 2001 4.0 S-Type and adding up the cost, I am seriously looking at dumping the car as I MAY have found another 2001 S-Type 4.0 for sale in my area I am looking into.

As I went down the cost I believe I can acquire another S-Type for a few bucks more than repairing mine. So the question becomes, what is an S-Type in really good physical condition (body, Interior, trans, etc., etc.) worth as either a project car or salvage? I did call a local salvage yard and got an estimate of it's worth to them so they make a good last option.

I would prefer to unload the whole car instead of parting out or simply removing every piece as backup parts for another S-Type I could acquire. If anyone is interested in the whole car I will provide pics.

Everytime I pull in the drive and see it, it really breaks my heart to unload all or part of it. As much as I feel I could do the work myself, time and money keep rearing up their heads!

Bill

You may want to learn from this and stay away from the sub-2003s...

There was that 03 STR for sale in your area a week ago Wille....if you are gonna get another one why not go a little newer and more power? The only reason I can see getting another 01 is if you are going to keep yours for parts.

Tough decision either way!

Bacardi, you are right. I checked out the "garage kept", "driven by a older gentleman", 2001 S-Type tonight and it certainly is a 2001 s-type right down to the occasional engine miss at idle, knocking sway bar bushings (or lower ball joints!), loose A pillar material, and not 68K miles but 83K.

I had hoped the guy was the original owner but he was not, so my little experiment really worked out. Looks like I may make the investment in doing the replacement engine after all. For a car that was supposed to be garage kept it was not as clean as ours which gets left outside, is a daily driver and winter snowmobile. Ours has no dents or scratches etc., etc. and I know what is left to do.

Sage advice you gave and my little experience tonight proved it. Better the devil you know then the one you don't!!!

Thanks again!

Hi Chris,

If you read my reply to Bacardi, the one I looked at tonight is not worth the risk so I will probably just go with repairing mine after all.

While it would be cool to do the R motor, my 2004 GTO has all the power I need and should I desire 100hp more there is always a blower adddition..... hey wait a minute!

Naw, I'll fix the wifes car and hope for the best!

Thanks for all the assistence.
