I am sorry if this is a stupid question and I feel bad for asking....

Currently doing my annual motor oil change and realize that I have not replaced the drain plug in a few years. Should this be done? Most cars have a removable gasket on the drain plugs and it is just the gasket that needs to be replaced with each oil change, but my Jaguar drain plug does not appear to have a gasket that can be replaced.

One last question about this drain plug.... is it a 10mm?

2005 S-Type V6 (Not the "R')

Jag charges $20 for a drain plug.... not cheap in my opinion. I am not aware if Autozone or Checker sells them for a Jag. I guess I can call.
But back to my question, how often does the drain plug need to be replaced? I realize a gasket that slides onto a drain plug should be replaced each time an oil change is done. But the 2005 S-type V6 oil drain plug does not have a removable gasket.

I've never changed mine since 2007 when I got the car, no problems so far.

Do you know what size socket size it takes to remove the original drain plug?

My 2005 S-Type's oil pan drain plug is 13mm. I replaced it a couple of years ago because the head is relatively soft metal and mine was becoming rounded after years of oil & filter changes. With the new plug I quit using my socket wrench to remove and install it and switched to my open-ended box wrench instead. Better overall fit, no tool wobble, therefore much less likely to round off the head....

My oil pan drain plug indeed has a replaceable rubber seal. The local Jaguar dealership parts department gave me two or three of them back in March 2009 when I was purchasing another part. The rubber seal's part number is NCE1850AB. I've never opened the original sealed plastic packaging in an effort to preserve them in case I ever need them....

Sounds like I might be missing a gasket.

I just had the oil changed by a garage that services Jaguars and they replaced the Drain Plug Seal for $3.72 and it was labeled as a Jaguar part

If you know plug diameter, you can buy a seal washer from any auto parts store.

My STR has an O-ring on the drain plug not a gasket. Still on the original plug and O-ring at 111K miles.

True enough! But it has chrome wheels. Does that help?
