Default ZF-6HP26 Transmission Problem

Would a transmission from a 2006 S-Type 3.0 fit on my 2004 S-Type 3.0? Just by looking at them they appear to be similar.

Best way is to check the codes and bar label on side of trans case. If they are compatible:

Unless you swap out the TCM from the troubled trans to the donor you will need to flash the TCM on the donor trans if it's in the VIN Range.

So I'll give you a little more background on this issue.

A couple weeks ago I noticed that every now and then the transmission was shifting hard from 3rd to 2nd then from 1st to 2nd. But like I said it was all the time. So I decided to take a look at the transmission and noted that the pan was a little wet due to a leak coming from sleeve of the connector in the back. I unplug the connector and noted that it was also wet so I cleaned it and plug it back to the sleeve. Since this transmission do not have a stick to measure the levels I went ahead and top it off the same way i did it 5k ago when i replaced the transmission fluid, pan and filter. This is a link of a video i followed to do the transmission fluid change.
by the way I did the fluid change because I had to replace the transmission hoses due to a leak when I had just bought the vehicle.

Going back to the issue after I added the fluid to the transmission a for a whole week the vehicle was shifting fine until a couple days ago i started it in the morning drove 2 blocks and the transmission failed it was knocking really hard so I slowly drove it back to my drive way. It showed codes P0701 and P0733 when I scanned it.

Three days later when I came back from a work trip I started it again and everything seem to be fine codes were gone and it was shifting fine, but of course i knew something was wrong. so i kept driving it every day until 3 days later I had the same problem but this time it happen after the vehicle its been running a while but similar to the first time during slow speed. So i scanned it again and codes P0701 and P0731 showed up.

So as i was looking a part for another vehicle at a junk yard I found a 2006 S-type 3.0 with the same mileage as mine (120K) however the transmission look free of leaks and the carfax records of this vehicle do not show any transmission issues and since the price for the transmission at the junk yard is only $100 bucks I wanted to give it a shot. But like I mention previously Im not sure if it will work even thought it looks like the same transmission.

Before you begin swapping gearboxes and reflashing modules, check the fluid level. Attached is the procedure to correctly check the gearbox fluid level. Use an infrared thermometer to ensure the gearbox is at the correct temperature.

Just to cover basics and not offend .did you use zf lifeguard 6 or equivalent trans fluid and do the fluid check exactly as the PDF nbcat posted..if the trans temp is not correct the levels will be too little or too much...the trans temp gets to 50 degrees C quicker than you think....especially when you are doing it by yourself. I had my son monitoring trans temp via the obd with my scanner while I pumped in fluid . Made it real easy...another thing is that the car needs to be level...easy to do on a lift .Harder on jackstands..but still level no matter what
