I would really like to replace the big bus steering wheel in my Jag. With power steering I really dont see the point of such a big wheel.

Even though I am a lumper, my Jag looks totally original inside (the cabin) and out. I would like to replace what I have but I want it to go with the Jag "ambiance".

Please post a picture of replacement steering wheels you have fitted (please say what it is). I'd like to see whats out there, and how it looks in an XJ6.

 

I modded a later model wheel so its still jag, looks alot better in the day with out a camera flash

 

I'm thinking the same Steve.......just not sure.

I grew up driving stuff with "school bus" steering wheels. I dislike the little fat wheel of the Adequate Vehicle (Sonata) which seems to be the fashion now. The farm tractor steers easier!

Nix had the perfect combination of power assist and steering wheel size when she came to me, in fact, that was one of the things I liked most. One finger steering! I Loved it!

After changing the rack to a Series 3 rack, steering effort is more than doubled and I need driving gloves to steer safely with one hand, even with the stock "school bus" wheel. I can't Imagine the increased effort with a smaller wheel, and fatter simply doesn't fit my hands. It's clumsy.

Looking through my stuff, I have two old steering wheels!!! One is similar to the classic mid thirties Ford "banjo" style. some research found that it isn't! An older brit car, perhaps. Definitely pre power steering era, hence a "school bus" type. It will go on amazon for sale, if I can ever figure out how to post there!!!




Another even older, thick wood wrapped in old style electricians tape.
Tractor or elderly truck. Now, this is a school bus style. amazon bound...


I like the larger wheels. My IHC Scout II, albeit with PS, had one. I liked it.


Jaguar and Jeep wheel's kinda midway.... OK, but smallish.


Elinor: I think the assist on your cars GM pump can be worked on.
Andrew Weinberg of Jaguar Specialties has written on it. Lessening the assist by spring and valve changes.


Older Chrysler PS was a bit over-assisted.

Nardi all the way!!!

 

My wheel is from XJS. Still large and not much different to the stock XJ6 one, I don't really like it.

IMHO the modern fatter/smaller wood rimmed wheels yell at our "period" interiors...I believe the only alternatives that really suit Series XJ's are the thin wood rimmed ones with slightly smaller than stock (15"?) diameter from Nardi or Moto-Lita. Far more elegant and in keeping with Jaguar style.

Steve, don't know if you're aware but Lou Guthry in Moorabbin is a local agent for Moto-Lita. Also, JagDaim retail some interesting wheels (and correct boss kits!).

Couldn't afford a Nardi so i went SAAS.
Spokes are actually chrome not black.

 

I luv the look of this but with a smaller diameter......are they available?

I think I might have a bit of a rummage around at Jaigdaim next time I am down in Melbourne (of course just having arrived back from being there :-)

 

here's my Momo Olympic, 15" and thick grip, all black leather. Very expensive it was in 1992.

Ya, I love the big, skinny ones too. As a kid, I remember watching my dad in our '66 Galaxie, spinning that wheel with one finger. I thought it was so cool.

 

+1 big and skinny is the way to go. All the ones pictured, excluding the nardi, look painfully out of place.

 

I went with a wheel from an 89 xjs. Absolutely love it in that it's more or less stock, but a much preferred thickness in my opinion.

 

That's the one I have. The rim thickness is fine but I still find the diameter too big and bus like.
