its under the intake manifold . one on each bank . bank 2 is left bank.
probably do them both wile the manifold is off . ok so this is a 4.2 s/c but should be the same . see the two black sensors with the wires coming from them in the valley .

Nice. So bank 2 would be on passenger side for u guys down under and driver side in NA right? How long does removing the manifold take ? Was thinking it was a 20 minute. Thx for the pic. Now to figure out how to remove manifold

Your on to it . It's our passengers side way down here .
Look across your engine , bank 1 is always slightly more forward than bank 2 .
It will be self explanatory when you pull the plastic cover off and remove your t/b as to how to remove the manafold ,
You'll find a row each side of about 8 screws .
Maybe pre order your gaskits and
Knock sensers , be aware that your earlier sensers may look differant to mine and may thread in to the block rather than bolt down as mine do .

Bank 1 need not be "more forward". It is defined as the RH bank (in the sense you have RHD / LHD car).

So are you saying that if you have a LHD car it's has LH bank 1 ?
Do the cylender no#s change with this strategy ?
I have never ever heard this before , in my life time owning several HOLDEN v8s and plenty more than ford v8s all have had bank one with uneven cylender no# on bank 1 (the leading bank ! Some of my ford v8s were fitted with American intake manafolds with the casting of the cylender no# on them matching the RHD Australian equivalent manifold, so this point to no ,
Any way that makes it a no brainer to change both sensers wile your under there . To save repeat work and confusion .

No. Bank 1 is standardised as RH.

Bank 1 always contains cyl 1.

Then a standard says where any other cyls are.

Of course there may still be car makers who ignore standards - though they have to follow them by law in most jurisdictions e.g. for OBD (aka EOBD aka JOBD etc).

However, people often have trouble understanding RH despite knowing what RHD / LHD mean.

Well I just spent an hour trying to confirm one way or the other . As I was taught leading bank has no#1 .
And searched many brands of v- engines , and also searched just answer .
And just answer uses my termanolagy as well , ford , jaguar , olds, chev, mazda, Chrysler , toyota, Nissan , Pontiac , Honda , holden , isuzu , all have there no#1 on the leading bank , and I can't find one that doesn't ! And although pre obd Pontiac and olds have there leading bank on the LHS bank as well as cylender no#1. The transverse or east/west engines from Japan can have leading bank near the radiator or by the bulkhead but still use the leading bank for no#1 . So some one will have to prove to me that what I was taught is rong and what I'm reading is rong otherwise I'm sticking with this theory . I'm thinking that if an engine exists that is the other way round I will probably never see it with my eyes , so it will not matter if I continue using this method of I.d.as it is 98% correct.

must be just local to you . i searched SAE & ISO learnt a lot also about formula SAE, but nothing about this .
i did search several other forums and found many posts stateing mostly along these lines:
(Whichever bank is more forward is the one that contains cylinder #1. General rule of thumb.not just on ls1's...When I say forward, i mean whichever bank sticks out towards the front of the car more.. not rocket science here…)
+
chrysler/jeep/gm,chev,&holden still put the leading bank on the LHS and label it bank1 with cylender1 LHS .
also found this
http://o2sensors.com.au/static/o2-se...-and-locations
but still nothing to the contrary.

ha . i know !. how about i rephrase that .
it must be only policed locally to you as there is some discrepancies here, with some major manufacturer's and world wide suppliers choosing to ignore this so called law .
i can understand japans language barrier as a possible cause . but no reason for most of america and australia getting this wrong . it seems that they are all pulling the middle finger at SAE and getting away with it . and with that, the more forward bank1 theory is still valid as is still not proven otherwise .. also with that law, regulation, agreement or what ever or not , I'm bowing out from this argument with my chosen theory still valid to date and backed by many . it may foot trip me one day but never has yet. i may learn this one the hard way but i some how doubt it .

They'll be following OBD as the fines for non-compliance are horrific. Maybe you're thinking of cars pre-OBD (which is more than 20 years old).

you would think so! ford complies but using leading bank as bank 1 on the right like jag. you can rule out chrysler as non existent bar dodge but I'm not sure about dodge as far as leading bank goes , i can check my work mates 6.4 hemi jeep SRT tomorrow.
as for chev/GM not so much in this link you can scroll down mid page to the link of all the yankie bank ones and chev have not changed. the current ls7 and ls3 gen4 is listed as ban1 on left . although not stated it is also there leading bank . and seen as these engines are diagramed as multiple o2 sensed engines i would presume obd2 , but obveatly non compliant see for your self .

I have no idea how they square their claims with the law in their own country. In my experience the law always wins but YMMV. Certainly VW/Audi are finding the law wins.

Agreed on that for sure !
But In my opinion big ups to Audi for being cleaver about it , big shame there tech neak was found/ uncovered , as really thay were putting the customer first by giving us what we want (more power)(better than the opposition) before the law ! I'm all for it . And Im certain that those few efichiont fast Audi diesels that are tootling around out there will not be the end of the world , there is bigger fish to fry than that ! I would buy there higher out put audi over the slower performing diesel focus who wouldn't , clever marketing . It shows that these manufactures are having to think out side the box to not just obide by the Impossible laws , but to also retain and gain and loure customers. Which is becoming impossible because of the opposition being axacly the same , because of the stupid laws dictating standardisation .
vishios circle , somethings got to give.

That ignores the deaths, misery, COPD, etc caused by the polluting diesels.

The laws were set in order to reduce (I suppose ideally, prevent) those deaths. Deliberately flouting such laws is appalling and no wonder the heavy penalties.

Didn't know deaths were related to diesel ! I thought diesel emitted furtiliser !
We have a uro 6 Isuzu truck with a particle filter . It does its burn off twice a day emitting smoke & poisons that the Isuzu instruction vidio says not to breath as its carsonogenic and poisons and can kill you mean wile it passes all the emission tests and melts Tarmac wile it kills you still ? I don't think Audi is big killer here , but your right the rules are the rules for us all to perceive as we will.

So I should probably change the manifold gaskets and both sensors while im at it. Just one last question, how does one know if their car is up to 2002.5 my or 2002.5 onwards?

Yes it would be wise to do both sensers and defiantly replace the manifold gaskits .
Jagv8 has kindly posted in previous tread a link to ford etis.
Go to this link press vehicle , then type in your vin .
There will be more info on your car than you'll know what to do with !
Also the pre face lift dash is a dead give away wether or not it's a facelift car .
Being a 4.0 and not a 4.2 I'd say it's pre facelift !
