Default '91 Jaguar XJ6 Oil Pressure Sending Unit

The oil pressure gauge on my vehicle drops down to near zero at stop lights/signs after running for around 10 minutes. The oil level is fine and the car runs excellent (has about 84k miles on it). I feel like I've narrowed it down to the oil pressure sending unit being the problem. What I'm wondering is where the sending unit is located (good landmarks please. I'm not terrible with cars but by no means an expert). I'm considering replacing the sending unit because of this problem and because I feel it might be the culprit of a very slight oil leak. If anyone could tell me the location or provide some kind of expertise on the problem I've described, it'd be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Welcome to the Forums.

When time permits, please do an intro in the New Member Area.

Your 1991 XJ6 is known as an XJ40 in Jag Talk.

Fear not, no harm done.

And YES there is a known issue with the sender unit on that model, and the newer "switch style" sender will sort that gauge well.

A quickie repost in the XJ40 section will get answers also.

Welcome to the forum Hutch91,

I've moved your question from XJ6 & XJ12 Series I, II & III to XJ40 forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Hi there Hutch - Take a look at this thread - it covers most of your questions about your oil pressure sender.

Hi Hutch91,

Welcome to the Jaguar Forums!

In the photo below, the oil pressure sender can be seen to the left of the oil filter. This photo was taken with the intake manifold removed. It is possible to change the oil pressure sender without removing the manifold but just removing some of the air intake plumbing. Use a crow's foot wrench like the one shown in Jim's photos in the first post of the thread Larry posted the link to earlier. The work has to be done blind, by feel, but a small inspection mirror will help you get oriented to the location of the sensor.

The sender in this photo is the newer switch style. The sender in Jim's photos is the earlier transducer (variable output) style.

Note that the sensor has only one wire because the ground path is through the engine block. So you want to clean as much of the oil as possible off the threads in the block port for a good electrical connection with the new sensor. Also clean the connector on the electrical harness which will probably have some oil in it. Zero-residue electrical contact cleaner spray is available at any auto parts store (CRC is a popular brand).

Cheers,

Don
