90k+ miles on and XFR is it too much?
Some of you may have seen I asked this already in one of my other threads so please excuse me, but I really want to make sure im making the right decision before I pull the trigger.
I had been looking for XF S/C for quite some time and none really showed up that I fancied. A 2010 XF R just came to my attention for a reasonable price, it looks immaculate and my mechanic said it looks and feels in good shape, even though he advised me against an XFR.
The same dealer has a standard 2010 XF with only 34k miles and 2k more expensive, I know thats probably the sensible buy but my heart has been set on a s/c or XFR now that ive driven it...
I really just want to feel good about buying a car with 90k+ miles on it, I am getting the warranty with it which is either 5 or 6 years or 100k additional miles.. I plan to keep it for that duration am I crazy? I generally hoped to find a car with between 65-75k miles for peace of mind but here I am..
Look forward to hearing your thoughts.
Thanks again!

Check if the warranty is an exclusionary warranty. If it is, find out what it doesn't cover. If you have money to replace any of that stuff as it comes up, then buy it. If you don't, you really shouldn't do it as you'll be one of the sour people on the forum that speaks poorly of Jaguar when in fact, it's really just used high end car problems.
And I'm really curious why the mechanic you are working with says that an XFR would be a worse option than an XF SC? Makes me question his knowledge of the brand. Except for the body work, the seats and the programming on the engine tune, they are the exact same car. And none of those things would make any difference on reliability.
And you live in LA? You should be able to find something to your liking. What is your budget?

The warranty seems to cover most major parts, I just hope it's reliable warranty like its name lol, can't find much about them online.
I'd love to know if there is many high mileage s/c or xfr owners on here..
Budget is around 25k.
Plenty of STR (the precursor to the XFR) have taken their cars up towards 200K mi.
But, that is with the 4.2 V8 not the 5.0. There may be real differences there.

first off Get a super charged car....you will regret and always wish you had...i would look nationally for the car more options... whats your max $ ,.... if your warranty covers everything...i had one once that covered everything but tires and brakes, then no worries.....an S/C or XFR u can tune both for really cheap...

Can you explain a little more about the tuning you speak of?
Ps attached is the details of the warranty, anything I should be concerned about?
thanks
I admire their calling it "Reliable Warranty" as opposed to "DontBotherEvenTryingToMakeAClaim Warranty" - if that really is the extent of their coverage then think of all the things that leaves out. At that kind of mileage you could be looking at engine mounts, wheel bearings, suspension components, water pumps, etc. My 2010XFR just had the engine and transmission mounts replaced and the warranty company picked up the $800 bill. If the mileage is bothering you but you still want an XFR or SC then cast the net wider - my XFR was one of two I narrowed down, one in Denver one in Phoenix. I paid $500 for the transportation but got the colour combination I wanted with the service history I was comfortable with and a mileage of 47K. If the mileage is something really bothering you (and I don't know how many miles per year you expect to add), then walk away and keep watching rather than act too hastily and live to regret your Jag experience. Easy to say I know...

i bought one of my STRs from a member here...i shipped it from New York to Oregon...it had 80,000 miles, and some wrk done on it plus a really nice 24mo warranty... i never had an issue and never made a claim...my jags however are not daily drivers... just weekends and date nights so i dont put many miles on them...that being said... if i was to drive mine all the time id be looking for a 50k or less in miles....they are out there... ok so the tuning...my S/C is 470 hp stock.... XFR is 510.... they have the same hardware just a different tune... i bought the tune from Eurcharged $699... gets you to 550 hr for the s/c and the XFR the S?C car experiencing the biggest gain. puts you at , their numbers , 550 hp like an XKR or a newer XFR S add the pulley for another 15-20 and you get a pretty fast car....very very noticeable over stock....

Yea true but I have been looking rather widely for quite sometime and either haven't found anything in the price range or with color combo or in decent enough condition.. This car looks immaculate and seems to be well maintained.. The milage plays a bit with the mind I guess. Some say go for t others say it will be problem. I'm not sure if the dealer can provide a warranty that covers more than that so I don't know.
I think the problem is with that number of miles many warranty companies will walk away, which of itself might tell you something. As has been said, it really depends on the mileage you plan to put on it. So here's my litmus test - two weeks in, it goes into the shop and they tell you it's $2K to fix it. How do you react ?
..you haven't dealt with many warranty companies, have you, but better than nothing. Seems like you have made your mind up.
Ha no I haven't but I can only imagine.. Is it really tough to get them to pay up? I don't want to be dropping 2300 on a warranty if it's not going to do anything but line their pockets..
One place you may want to consider is Carmax or similar. While I am not their biggest fan, I have purchased a car from them previously, and their extended warranty was quite good - although it is something you pay for on top of the price of the vehicle, which tends to be a bit inflated as opposed to KBB.
They also have a "grace" period when you can return the car, and during this time it's advisable to have an independent shop check it out. If there are things wrong that Carmax has not taken care of, you then have the option of returning it, but a lot of the time they will take care of the issue(s). In CA they also have a policy where if anything breaks or goes wrong within thirty days, they'll take care of it. That may be all of them, not sure.
When I was looking at XFR - XF-SC they almost got my business, even replacing three of the four wheels on the car I was looking at as they were pretty beat up and wouldn't balance. But I am picky as hell and the one I was looking at left to many doubts.
Fortunately there weren't constraints on budget so I purchased a CPO from the local dealer, but that sounds like it's not an option for you at present.. But always remember, these are performance cars, so anything not covered by the extended warranty will not be cheap.

At current time of writing, my 2011 XFR has just about 80,6xx miles. I purchased the car just under three years about and have averaged about 22,000 miles per year during my ownership. Though many of these miles have come from long distance commuting, there are quite a few miles where my XFR has been subject to both track and spirited driving used in the local Santa Monica mountains. I had an upper supercharger pulley installed at about 65,000 miles and I also had a tune thrown on shortly thereafter.
Other than known issues, my XFR has been dead solid reliable even though it has been put through its paces. Here is a quick summary of things I've had to address during my ownership:
- Water Pump
- Coolant expansion tank
- Thermostat
- Lower front control arm bushings
- Leaking seal on the drivers front strut assembly (due to a heavy track day but replaced under warranty)
These are the only major issues I've had to address and the water pump is a known problem area for these vehicles. My coolant expansion tank was replaced because of a broken mounting tab and visible wear on the front side of the tank. My thermostat was replaced after I noticed climbing water temperatures combined with a warning of "High Engine Temperature" on the message center of the instrument cluster. The lower control arm bushings are a known wear area but the life of these bushings heavily depending on the type of driving you are doing.
Other than these, the car has been rock solid needing only normal maintenance. With that being said, a transmission fluid flush and rear differential fluid flush is highly advisable at the mileages your are considering so it is definitely something to factor into your decision. It is also recommended to replace the spark plugs at around 105k miles in the maintenance schedule.
Best of luck in your decision!

Another thing that can be helpful is to take the VIN to a dealer and ask for a service history. You'll at least get what was done with the dealer. Although a lot of this should show up on a Carfax, but better to be more informed than less.
Nice how many miles on yours? Where u located lol?
