does anyone have a "picture" of where the CKP is located on a 2001 XJ8? I would like to put in a new one, but finding its location is difficult. If anyone has instructions on how to replace would be helpful as well.

I have moved your post from the forum for the X350 to the forum for the X308, which is the Jaguar factory project code for your 2001 XJ8.

The crankshaft position sensor for your car is mounted on the flywheel/flexplate housing at the rear of the engine where it meets the transmission. You'll have to raise the front of the car and crawl underneath to see it. Here's the diagram from the Workshop Manual:




The sensor is held in place by one hex-head screw, part 1 in the diagram. If it is covered with gunk, clean the area with some brake parts cleaner spray before attempting to remove the sensor (wear safety goggles to protect your eyes). Now remove the screw and the sensor just pulls out. If it is stuck, twist it clockwise and counterclockwise to work it free. Wipe the area around the opening where the sensor fits with a clean cloth dampened in brake cleaner to remove any gunk or other residue.

Disconnect the electrical connector and you're ready to install the new sensor, which is just the reverse of removal. The torque spec for the screw is 8-12 Nm / 6-9 lb. ft., which is just a little more than hand tight, so don't overtighten the screw and risk damaging the new sensor.
