Own a 1999 Jag XJ8L.
Anyone know what size and thread count the rear axle nut is?
I know it uses a self torquing nut, But I cant find any over here and cant afford 60 bux for one. There has to someone who knows what the thread and size is..
Any help would be appreciated...

 

You got me at a good time. I went and took some pics of an old one I had. these are not to be re-used because of the crush spacer/thread/whatever that goes in it.





Hope fully you can see the sizes. Fro threads, the nut is 3/4-19mm tall. I check around and see if I can find the specs but this may be a start.

 

Thanks, Yeah, the insert looks like a helicoil I noticed when I did mine.

 

The axle nuts are a safety item.

Lots of stories of them coming loose when the owner
decided to reuse or substitute.

The result is not pretty.

AMECA makes this type of nut, called AMELOCK, but I have not been able to find a vendor that will sell them in small quantities (1 or 2, for example).

AMECA states that the nut "Keeps its locking action after several assembly/disassembly operations," but I think the reason Jaguar states it must be replaced after one use is that in this application the nut is torqued to 220+ lb. ft., which probably deforms the helicoil insert so completely that its locking ability cannot be relied upon for a second use.

To add to plums' cautions, I am aware of two members of the Jag-Lovers forum whose hubs came loose while driving after they reused the axle nuts. You definitely do not want that to happen to you!

Regarding the size and thread of the nut, I can't recall off the top of my head, but I believe I posted that info in the Jag-Lovers forum so you might search the archives there. I believe it is a standard size, so if you measure the wrench size that will get you in the ballpark.

Thanks. Yeah I found out the hard way on the nuts. I did reuse one a couple times and had problems, But I used to have a bix of axe nuts and found one to work last year. I did a pinch on the nut and its held for 40 thousand miles now. Wish I had wrote down that nut number so I could have bought another. Thanks for the info...

 

the axle nut is an m18 (forget the thread pitch). the distorted thread locknuts jag uses are very very good. hub nuts at terrys jag are $26.

Helpful thread here. I am in the process of replacing my rear wheel bearings on both sides. I have spent time on the forum and with the JTIS and am comfortable that I've measured end play correctly and ordered the correct shims to achieve the desired end play.

My question is, which way do the new axle nuts go on? There is a helicoil like locking system inside the new nuts, but the helicoil thing only goes about 2/3 of the way through the nuts. So which way do I thread them on? Helicoil first? Thank you!

I'm not certain that it matters, but I've always threaded them on with the helicoil toward the outside and they seem to stay put.
