Default AJV8 flywheel

Need some advice on flywheels..

i I have a 4.2 supercharged AJV8 engine that I'm putting into a Nissan s15 drift car. I am using the v6 manual 6 speed box and have a Tilton triple plate clutch. Only thing I need now is a flywheel but am struggling to source one.

i was going to have a lightened one piece flywheel made but they need all sorts of specs and a gear ring to make it and wondered if there was an easier option.

Any my advice on where to source one or what I need to look for ( I read that the AJV8 is a successor to the rover V8 but I thought that was a 3.5) would the flywheels be the same and would it fit the 4.2AJ?

Althernatively does anyone know where I could get a decent performancekywheel for the 4.2.

hope someone can shed some light on this as I'm a big stuck at the moment. Thanks. Ben

Datsports thanks for your reply. That is a very useful thread for my build so thanks for that link but I am still unsure about other flywheels hat may work for he engine. There are a few options around on eBay and suchlike for other flywheels of the AJs successors and predecessors but not sure if they are the same

from what I've read the s type diesel manual flywheel is the closest match.
but modifying the xk220 one looks like the strongest option to me .and its been done .
some one else might have better insight though.
if i stumble across anything ill let you know.

have a look at this , its surly worth running a few measurements from it .
as it looks remarkably like what your looking for .
its a TVR celibra 4.2 v8 . engine supplied by rover .called the AJ-P8 .
this could be a dead end , but worth a look for sure .

Thanks mate and yes that's the flywheel I've looked at aswell I think both the AJv8 and the AJ-P v8 from the TVs are both successors of the rover v8 making me think they might be very similar or identical in a lot of components

I did some research on flywheels for the AJ-V8 engines. 134 tooth ring, about 13.62" OD. I couldn't find any readily available flywheels to adapt to our crank bolt pattern. One of the things you will have to do is add up the dimensions of the housing and adapter plate compared to the input shaft length of the transmission you plan on using. This will determine the height and location of the pilot bushing and height of the flywheel. Then there is the matter of what clutch to use. If you find one of the rare Jaguar housings and then use an adapter plate at the trans, you will find that you can't use regular 12" diameter clutch plates. You have to use an 11 or 10 in clutch. Based on the HP rating of the engine, you may need to use a double or triple disc clutch.

Lots of planning and measuring, but worth the effort to be sure things will fit together.
I'll wager you have to have a custom flywheel made. Please share with us who you end up going with because many of us would like to eventually adapt manuals to our S-types.

I have the gearbox from the 2.7 diesel v6 which is a direct Fitment and I also already have a Tilton triple plate clutch which from memory is either 9.5 or 10.5".

I have been told that to make it work I can use hat gearbox and the Tilton clutch and all I need is to use the AJv8 starter gear ring and mate it up to a flywheel which will fit the engine and clutch. So that's what I'm now looking for is a flywheel to match the ajv8 engine.

I have the CAD drawings for a flywheel which will work but was wondering if there was an easier option before I have one made although by the sounds of it I agree with you that I will probably have to get one made.

As for the conversion obviously I'm not doing a manual conversion to a jaguar I am purely using the engine and it's going into a Nissan s15 drift car but I will post up the final results and specifications for you when it's done as I'm sure it will have he same applications into the original jaguar it came from

I believe the AJ V8 is not related to the rover V8.
It's Jaguar's own.

uses the flex plate for starting and timing. Clutch is good for about 500bhp according to Mcleod racing.

looks sameish to what I have done,
I did here AM may have used one but at what cost,
so like you got the flexplate from the auto,and made a flywheel,
and did not cost much at all,

I like this approach. Was thinking of removing the starter ring from the flex plate, and have it pressed to an aluminum flywheel.

Did it balance ok?

This approach will also let you adjust the height for the input shaft length to match things up.

yes all ok,i got a cast billet and just tuned it to match the 2.7 flywheel,

Timing sensor question. Has anyone figured out if our flexplate timing sensors are hall effect or inductive sensors. Reason I ask is if the sensor will detect aluminum versus steel.

Had mine out yesterday , and I'm certain it was magnetic . As it drew itself back in when I refitted it , so I'm going with no alloy won't work .

Hi there. New to this but joined specifically because of this info. Has anyone considered approaching TTV Racing with an S Type flywheel so they can make a solid one from it? Their production flywheels are superb quality and average around the £250 mark. I've not got to that stage yet.....

I expect most if not all would be thinking "never heard of them", so no. Especially with the rather tiny numbers interested.

I certainly will once I get to that stage. First thing for me, though, will be to get the engine amd 'box in and the mounts made. I'm 99% sure I'll need to make a new front cross member as my original engine is rear sump and the AJ-V8 is front sump, so I'd like to get that sorted first.

It’s no problem to make a flywheel for you, all we require is the AJ v8 flex plate that would be used with the automatic gearbox, the clutch you wish to use with your manual gearbox and a height for the flywheel from crank mating face to clutch friction face.

Ok, gotta ask the question... What the heck are you doing? Are you transferring a Jaguar V8 into another car and if so, why?

Seems almost impossible to me.
