When I installed my tune I had a coolant leak. Probably caused by an old part not being able to handle the increased demand of flow. The was easy enough to fix, because it was essentially on top of the engine. Now I installed a oversize crank pulley, which increased my boost (and torque and HP ), but...again..my cooling system isn't able to cope with the increased pressure. Problem is trying to find the leak is hard because it only happens under high load/pressure. If I drive the car normally...no leak...if I mash the pedal....I have a bleeding coolant artery. I am looking for a "map" of the cooling system hoses so I can trace the leak.
Today I replaced the upper coolant outlet pipe (plastic , sonic welded POS!!!). This is the third one that I have replaced. Took care of the major issue. Unfortunately, I am still getting coolant level low warnings. I have added probably a gallon of Pentafrost today and it just keeps leaking out from somewhere. I have let the car sit at idle for 15 minutes, revved it to high RPM's and can't find anything but A/C condensation (clear, tasted not sweet) underneath. I drove to downtown and back ( ~50 mile round trip) and almost made it back home when the damm warning came up again. The fight is tonight ...I guess I will have to carry a funnel and jug of Pentafrost with me tonight....not my idea of exotic.
I think the pulley and tune is creating too much pressure for the hoses and they are bleeding under load but not at idle. This is not a good thing, since it really will call for replacing many of the major coolant hoses. Of course, none of the easily replaceable hoses are bleeding...probably just the ones that you have to remove half the engine to get to.

No tune is going to increase the pressure in your cooling system unless the car is operating at a significantly higher temperature than before. And if that's the case, you have bigger problems to worry about.

ok. so the increased boost does not do anything to the cooling system? I am glad to hear that. trying to get a handle on this before I throw in the towel and take it in to get serviced. Trying to avoid explaining the pulley and tune....lol...The weird thing is that I can drive it like a sane person and there is no problem. But as soon as I open up, the warning flashes soon after and that did not happen before the pulley was installed. It did happen the first time when I flashed the tune, but the problem was an easy fix (upper coolant outlet pipe) and did not have issues since. I will try taking a look underneath tomorrow, but I just don't see anything except A/C condensation puddles. No pink fluid under the car...So where the heck is it going???

Check the engine under tray, any leaking fluid should end up there. If there's none in the tray and none on the ground I would start checking for leaks into the engine (head gasket etc.). Are you sure the engine has been properly bled? It can take a while for the level to stabilize but you are talking about a lot of coolant.
That's a scary thiought. I have both undertrays removed. If I have coolant going into the engine wouldn't I have other issues like loss of compresion? Bad gaskets also Wil coincide with oil consumption and lots of other issued that I am not seeing. I really hope it isn't something this serious..lol.
Will check the oil tomorrow. Just changed it two months ago ggrrrrrr
...and pressure test the expansion tank. I hope to sweet baby jesus I have a bad hose.

...I opened the oil cap...no milky residue. Drained the oil from the oil pan plug. Oil was very clean and still translucent. I decided to fill the expansion tank and leave the car running...20 minutes later, I go to garage and see a huge pool of pink fluid...I jumped for joy!!!
The leak is coming from somewhere in the back, but you cant see anything from up top. Will post a short video soon. I think its the heating core coolant return hose. Good thing is I can guide the Jag service advisor or techs to the problem. Hopefully they wont get too nosy and start poking around the ECU.
So glad this didn't turn out to be a gasket issue....phheewww!!!

..... or ones from the Parts Catalogue illustrating and naming each hose?
Graham
I am think that I found the leak. It is coming from the area highlighted in blue (I assume the red highlighted area is the thermo housing. It would be nice to do it myself rather than take it in. The more I can learn to do the better..lol...IT looks like I will need to remove the throttle body to get to the area, which seems simple enough, but what else will I run into once that is done?? I don;t know.
Also...It looks like there is room to put a throttle body spacer in there and I would like to spray this engine eventually and it look like being able to place a spacer for the injectors would be ideal....but first things first.
What hose is that back there? The diagram does not show it.

I am betting that if I get in there the leak will be coming from the bottom attachment of the upper coolant outlet pipe (red highlighted). That pipe is now made of sonic welded plastic in the newer XF's. In my 2011 it was a solid aluminium piece. It connects to another section of sonic welded plastic (blue arrow). Don't know what that part is called, but guess if I cant get to it It will find out soon enough...lol
I am not sure which XF you are referring to. But if I remember correctly you stated the normally aspirated 5.0l which you have listed as a 2011 XF and is like the one that I own. I had a coolant leak that I could not find. I changed the water pump and seals for the tube twice, then replaced the thermostat housing tube and all the tubes on the top of the engine only to still have the leak. I finally did the hardest one which is the one that comes from the top near the coolant tank and then down under the manifold. When I removed the intake manifold, I found it. The piece under the manifold was the culprit. And it is not that difficult to replace.

Its for the 2015 in my signature. Was your leak coming from the top of the engine...I think mine is coming from the two hoses that cool the throttle body, because when I got under the car the coolant was dripping from the front of the engine jsut behind all the pulleys.. I took the throttle body off and this is what it looked like:
and this is the bottom of the throttle body hose. It was really gunked up, so I take that as a sign that the leak originated from there.
Do you have a picture of the hose you are referring to or maybe a link to a possible post you did on the removal and replacement?
Look like the water pump needs to be replaced. Wow...only 46K on the odometer. I cant find my VTech flash module ....lol....F%^K.
was not the water pump...it was one of those dam plastic POS tubes again!!!...but since the pump had to come off anyways...it is still getting replaced..
