Grab the tube and rotate CCW. It unscrews from the cover. Replace the o-ring.
Thanks David. My filler cap obviously unscrews CCW, but if I try to unscrew the tube it has only a slight movement CW and CCW before it 'hard stops'? I thought I had better check back with you before attacking it with Mole Grips!
When (If) I do manage to remove it, is the o-ring easily obtainable, please?
David, Just had another look. I do not have a small metal tab. All I have is a small square plastic lug on the rear of the tube. I have tried prising away under there for a release tab but came up with nothing?
The Cam Cover is coming off very shortly (two very, very difficult to access bolts remaining), so I think I'll leave it until then, when I will have better access to it......
There's a small metal tab keeping it from turning more than a little bit. You have to lift this up.
OE part is AJ88581. You can get one for about $20 on eBay with the cap and all.
Hello again David - Apologies for being like a 'bad penny'. Has my small metal tab been broken off? Please, am I going to have to hacksaw the locking pin to get this (obviously leaking) Oil Filler tube off?
That is the slot where the metal retainer tab is, but I can't quite tell from the photo. It appears the metal tab is still in there. You might try cleaning it well with brake clean (or equivalent) and then using a magnet to slide it out. I think I used a magnetic screwdriver to remove mine.
Below is a brand new one, you can see the tab is actually retained by some glue. But you should just need to pry it up so that you can unscrew it from the cam cover.
Thanks Michael - I have been scratching my head over this one for ages!
I have it removed!
And because I have it removed, I have now managed to slide the Cam Cover out from under the fuel line (so I can now work on it while I await the tool to remove the connector). Also, I found the O-ring under it was rock-hard and it broke as I removed it - So very likely this poor seal has been providing an excellent supply of unmetered air!!
See pics below, the metal clip had cracked in the tube. Silly design but oh well.
2006 XJ8L X350 4.2 I tried to bend the clip back so I could find a rubber gasket and use the same part but it broke off. the metal in the tube was already shatterd.
the seal on my oil filler 'tube' appears to need replacing; how do i remove it, please?
hellk i know this been a couple of years but i am in the same situation, how where you able to get that oil filler tube pipe out? I cant get that small clip to move or pry it up. Any advice i will appreciate..... Hope you someone see this... Thanks guys..
Just take a small screwdriver and lift the pin up. Than rotat the pipe out.
Thank you so much for replying back. I will try again, i am using a metal point like a tothpick tipe but with no luck, ill get something flat this time...
I pried the metal tab with a small screwdriver. I lost the metal tab and replaced it but cutting a strip of aluminum out of my favorite beverage.
O-ring Dimensions:
Fill tube 37mm OD x 27mm ID
I replaced this with 2 common O-rings from the hardware store. Install the large O-ring first, then install the smaller O-ring to create a nice, tapered sealing surface.
#25 1-1/2" OD x 1-5/16" ID
#43 1-3/8" OD x 1-1/8" ID
