Default How to remove rear view mirror?

I need to remove the plastic cover over the rear view mirror area, in order to hopefully tap power off for a radar detector. I do not know how to remove this cover without breaking it, and have not been able to find any instructions. How can I do this?

There seem to be several different varieties of mirrors, so I included a picture of the one in my 2014 V6 S.

Thanks.

Is there a seam in the middle where two pieces come together?

I tapped power from the panel right behind the mirror as per the link in post #3.

Hmm. Thanks. It seems there are many varieties of mirror. Mine is not quite the same. There is a seam in the middle, but I can't tell if it comes apart there or if it is just a mold mark.

Weird.
I just checked mine, also a 2014 V6S, and it has no seam at all down the middle like shown in post #4, instead it has a gap/seam going horizontally across the mirror cover.

Just had a look at my car and found the same cover as shown in your picture . So definitly documentation doesn't fit to my car although it's copied from TOPIX with the matching VIN number .
Sorry for the misleading information.

Upon further inspection, it does LOOK like it should separate horizontally, but I cannot make the gap budge at all without putting too much pressure on it.

I suppose in the meantime I can just use a long black phone cord and run it temporarily along one of the A pillars. Will look kinda tacky though.

Update:
I managed to remove the plastic housing. I used a plastic "spudger" that I had for cell phone repairs, and used that to pry along the bottom of the plastic housing. It popped off easier than expected, and after it was off I was able to separate the left and right halves.

I never intended to pop the entire mirror off. How can I put it back on? The mounting system is really weird.

I think it's kind of a cam-lock mechanism.
twisting the mirror around the studbolt rotational axis (part glued to the wind sreen) will lock / unlock the unit . Unfortunately not more information available in workshop manual.

Regards
Ulrich

Thank you, I got it on, and got my radar detector wired up.

Out of curiosity, does anybody know what it in the little plastic housing to the right of the mirror? I assume it is some sort of antenna. GPS antenna (Nothing in my car uses a cell connection that I know of, so it can't be that).
It gets in the way of the radar detector slightly.

How did you manage to get the mirror back on? I've got a similar arrangement to the one in your photo but for the life of me I can't get it to go back after I dislodged it accidentally.

From memory, you have to rotate the mirror assemble about 90 degrees. Then, the hexagonal bolt thing will fit over, and then can be rotated back to normal position. The hexagonal bolt thing is not actually symmetrical, it turns out, but is wider in one direction than the other.

Fantastic! Managed to get it back on straight away. Amazing how one's mind just assumes a hex head is symmetrical - it's obvious when you look at it closely. Many many thanks - you have saved my sanity

Tried doing this last night to install my radar detector. Pulled down on the cover and cracked my windshield *sigh*.
I might let a professional do this - we could not get this cover off to save our lives.

I have a ‘17 and it has a similar setup where it looks like it can be split from the middle. What is this camera-looking thing in the back? Anyway, do you have any suggestions on how to take off the plastic? I couldn't find any visuals or YouTube videos on this topic.
