Hi guys. On the XJ6 ignition unit. What and where does the purple and black wire go to. It possibly looks like a earth.
does this need to be earthed to start the car?
problem is that my key and barrel are buggered and I need to move the car. I can remove the ignition easily enough but need to start her.
Is this wire a earth? XJ6 1974 SERIES 2
As for the purple/ black wire you don't need it. You have another one on your steering column for the horn. I replaced my ignition switch last year and after much research discovered the purple/black wire from the ignition switch has nothing to do with the horn but is a separate circuit for US market cars, it is for a warning buzzer we don't have on Australian or NZ delivered cars.
I found it in a wiring diagram for US specs. It seems the same harness is on all cars but un needed wires are not used.
Edit: I will try to find that diagram tonight and post it, for peace of mind.
You should be able to start the car without the key lock attached. In the back part of the switch (the harness that attaches to the back of the lock) you can turn the part in the inside with a screw driver and the car should start....mine did.
The barrel and lock are there just to stop other people turning your ignition and driving off with your car.
When I swapped out my overly worn ignition switch for a NOS unit I found that part. A PO had disconnected the alarm buzzer. The alarm is not to leave the key on!!! I reconnected it. The NOS unit from David Boger at everydayxj fixed a lot of oddities.
But, to jump start an XJ. All you need is to release the pin that lacks the steering. Barrel out will do just that. Then, a jump from one of the cowl posts to coil +. And another jump to the R/w from the start relay. Or just + from a cowl post direct to the solenoid on the starter.

excellent. Thank you for that. A replacement key barrel is very hard to find. Nothing available here in NZ
