I plan on replacing the stock air filter on my XK8 with a drop-in K&N Panel Air Filter and was wondering if anyone had to remove the air box to do it. I'm thinking the K&N installation is just that. A simple swap out but the K&N instructions say otherwise. The instructions show an additional rubber seal which needs to be adhered to the air box lid and to do that the box needs to be removed. Is that necessary? Could someone that has done this before chime in and let me know before I start wrenching away? Thanks in advance and sorry if this sounds like a lame question and I hope I don't start a discussion on K&N air filters.

 

If you get the right filter for your car it will fit without any modification. I have them in both of my cars.

 

Ditto here--simple 2 minute swap/drop in.

the filter frame might be thinner and requires a spacer gasket to make a good seal. you do not have to remove the air-box to do this. simply remove the cover by separating it from the intake runner; there is a clamp. i find it easier to remove the two bolts attaching to the throttle body, the full load breather and the MAF plug, off with the whole assembly, a minute to do. don't lose to seal at the throttle body. the box sealing clip under the intake runner is a pain, made a tool out of a paint stick.

 

The one that came with my 98 is cone shaped and simply sits in air box connected to tube, no cover on filter box. Think its a K&N.

 

Looks like a straight drop in procedure will do the trick. Thanks to almost everyone.

 

The cone shaped ones are typically a warm air inlet too

I put one in my 2000XK8 and it had way too much oil. Had to clean the mafs. Washed the filter and oiled it with less oil and now it's fine.

 

It's my understanding the XK8 and XKR already has a stock cold air intake set up. The cone style intakes I see in some of these cars sit in the engine bay so I would think all they do is suck in hot air which can degrade engine performance. I could be wrong but then again........

 

In this case you're right. The cold air intake function has been lost.

 

All I can say is that I have driven the car with this and the stock filter on and both feel just the same to me so i can't really say there is a downside ,you do get a lovely rasping sound on acceleration though,wouldn't advise anyone to buy one for the difference it makes unless it's a bargain buy as this was

 

Did you install the K&N Filter into a Jag XK? And if so, did you install an additional rubber seal into the lid? Or was the filter a simple swap out. I ask because my K&N Filter came with an additional rubber seal in the packing carton and I'm not certain if it is needed.

 

If you received the right filter for your car it should not require an additional seal however, things have a tendency to change with time. You should be able to identify if an additional seal is requires simply by looking at the old and new filters together. FYI I prefer the cold intake!
