ATF fluid level question
97 xk8 coupe, 68k mi.
back in march I drained the atf fluid, dropped the pan, changed the filter and put in trans go pressure regulator valve. I didn’t measure how much fluid came out as it missed the pan and went everywhere. When putting all back together I pumped in about 4 quarts febi oil. Turned car on, helper shifting gears and pumped in just under 2 more quarts of oil till stream, and capped.
I’ve driven a couple hundred miles and for some reason I had an inclination that the trans oil may be low, don’t know why just had a feeling.
so I just jacked up car on four stands, its level, and I opened the fill plug and just over a quart of oil came out of fill plug hole. Car is stone cold when removing filler plug, hasn’t ran in a few days. I know procedure requires a particular temp…. am I overfilled or should I just perform procedure? Thanks

The level has to be checked with the engine running or the level will be above the fill hole. The transmission has to be between 30-50 C with fluid dribbling out when you put the plug in. I start threading the plug when it reaches 30 as there is always a bit of a fumble getting it lined up.
Yes I know what the acronym stands for, my apologies for abbreviating a word then spelling it out, I was in a rush trying to post and didn’t proof read. And Thanks for your input on the matter motorcarman! super helpful! I couldn’t have figured it out with out you and your response, glad you took the time out of your life to answer my question so thoroughly!
Only remove the fill plug when the car is up to the specified temperature, if the car is cold you will lose a good amount of fluid when removing the fill plug. Now your trans is definitely low on fluid and you should go through the fill procedure to get it back up to the proper level.

Thanks guys I ended up draining the rest of fluid in pan out. Did the procedure and put in new fluid while running and shifting through gears.

Motorcar man is correct.
If you are doing the fluid change on a "borrowed" lift or on stands and you don't want to drive the car for a short while and then have to raise the car again, you could always leave the car raised but run the engine and occasionally switch through the gears for 15 minutes before allowing the fluid to cool before draining and refilling. You are not changing the filter this time so it's an easier job as you don't have to remove the pan.
The following does not apply to the 4.0 litre models but I'm not sure if this is quite as easy on the X150 models with the plastic pan as I suspect that the drain plug is not supposed to be re-usable. Rather than risk re-using the plug, I decided to pump out the fluid through the fill hole using an electric pump before refilling for the second time.
I've tried re-inserting the plastic plug in a removed plastic 6HP pan and it seemed to seal OK on re-use but this was not on the car. Does anyone know for a fact whether the plastic plug can be re-used?
