My wife calls it ****(I call it following "the procedure"), but I tidy everything away into cupboards and shelves after each process so I have clean work space and I know where to find every tool and item I will need for the next job. Sometimes I'm cleaning up 3-4 times a day, but you get that when you have too much spare time.
The first two boxes of parts arrived today,so I can make the most of my seven days off between shifts. I hope to have everything by friday so I can be on the road again next week.

I should have mentioned that I keep MY space around my car, and my husband keeps the workbench space. I have a constant battle to keep MY space relatively clear, because he is constantly dropping HIS things into MY space because, there is SPACE there.

I gave up trying to clean his workbench (I could have shown his stall, in similar condition) and got an old steel office desk and set it just out the door under the eves. If I need bench space I use that.

I'm glad to see the Most Important box has arrived; the Green one!

It would be un-Australian to start a 7 day break without a box like the green one,had to pick it up on the way home tonight to make sure I wasn't caught out in middle of a 12 hour garage session(lol).

Default Productive day

The last of the parts arrived today, had a productive day rebuilding diff. My first attempt at that, seemed to go ok.
Time to rebuild the calipers tomorrow, haven't even touched them yet. Another burnt mess to deal with.

Default English humour at its best.

The guy who thought of the way to mount the rear calipers must have been a funny bugger, probably a left handed transvestite! That lower bolt on the right caliper is a joke. Then you have to lock wire the sucker. I have no idea why the lock wire is needed as the calipers on my Jeep have been on and off a few times over the years and never fallen off, just do them up tight seems to work on them!
Anyway, starting to see some progress now.

Good progress.
How many cases did it take to get to this stage?

Default Don't count the beers

Lost count, but I could tell you exactly how many wire brush wheels and packs of steel wool, litres of paint stipper etc, etc.
But, we in Australia/NZ have an unwritten rule not to count the beers as she will always find out because you tell a mate how many beers it took ,and he will tell his better half, and she will tell all the girls and ultimately it will back to "her indoors", then I might in the Kaka.
I know its taken about 100 hours of my time.

First of all, I must say all your clean parts look *Very* nice!

And so what if it did take 100 hours of your time!? Now you KNOW the whole IRS is in good condition, your brakes are in good condition, and you've had opportunity to consume Quantities of Beer in the process. From this perspective it all seems to be a Win all around.

Well, except for that metric nut/bolt on the hanger. Ya just gotta put that right, Clarke, ya just gotta!

Clarke, I've always heard that nice clean, painted parts work better.
I'll bet these work lots better than they did a couple months ago.

Nice going!

The 100 hours is nothing if I end up with a good looking, working IRS. The long time is due to me doing everything at home and being too tight fisted to pay to have jobs done.(and I enjoy doing the whole lot myself) Could have spent $100 to have everything sand blasted instead of 3 days paint stripping($25 for paint stripper). Or the diff, struggling on the garage floor
Came across a small snag today that has put a stop to porceedings. It's the simple jobs that hold you up.

Default Cradle back in car

Cradle is in,no spare parts left over(which is always a good sign). Except for about 7 from the green box which I will sort out right now, then maybe take a couple from the yellow box that appeared today.
I would recommend getting help if you are planning on putting your IRS in alone, takes persistence and a bit of luck.

The whole job was easier then I thought it would be. The removable cradle is a great idea rather than trying to do everything under the car.
The hardest part of the job was getting it lined up to the holes to remount it,I should have got someone over to help with that part. No handbrake calipers on yet. Still have to work that out.

you must be so happy with yourself and with every right.....

Default Should hit the road tomorrow

Just got to pick up one brake hose in the morning, overlooked the rubber hose from body to cradle. Internally collapsed from the heat, the local brake shop has to get the connectors in tomorrow morning(I turned up there 5 minutes before closing on Saturday). Just going to drive it without a handbrake for now.
Get a mate over to bleed the brakes and off we go to another mates exhaust shop to have him cast an eye over the work and refit the rear mufflers and tail pipes. Had to butcher them a bit to remove them. Doe's sound good missing the rear mufflers.
Started first go,I have never left a vehicle sitting for a whole month without starting it before unless the engine has been in pieces. Guess a lot of you guys are used to winter lay ups. My winter is blue sky and 25c days, perfect riding and driving weather.
Hour count is up to 130 now.
